Q: Start-up "wrong" person. Very slow

Hi, As usual I'm turning to the best support group of people that I know of when I'm having issues. Here goes...I do not turn off our computer very often, so I'm not exactly sure when this started, but I'm sure is was happening before I upgraded to El Capitan.

I share the unit (iMac 27", late 2012) processor 2.9Ghz, Intel Core i5, Memory 32GB 1333 Mhz DDR3), with my wife. We each have separate sign-on's. When one of us wants to use it, we just have the other sigh-off and then sign in as the correct user.

Here is what's happening: When the unit is powered off completely and I turn it on, it always brings up my wife's "sign-on", even though I'm the primary on the system. If either of us is adding S/W or upgrading, it's my information that the system requires in order to proceed. Why does it always start with my wife's opening and not mine? How can I get it to open with my information instead?

Also, even though I've upgraded and maxed out my RAM to 32 G, the system is extremely slow. Whether opening, or working, it is much slower than when originally purchased. It's getting ridiculous as to how slow it is just to get started with anything. And opening ANY applications takes forever.

Can anyone offer fixes or recommend a solution to fixing these irritating issues?

cheers,

Jack

    Hello nyjack1953,

If I understand correctly you have two issues here. First the computer seems to want to log into your wife's account when you turn it on from being off and your system is also slow to perform any tasks. For the first issue I would check to see if Automatic Logon is enabled:

Set your Mac to automatically log in during startup

For your system slowness I would boot to Safe Mode on your computer. That will clear some system level caches, and perform a disk verification and repair if needed:

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up

Follow these steps to start up into safe mode.

    1. Start or restart your Mac.
    2. Immediately after you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Shift key.
    3. Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.

After the Apple logo appears, it might take longer than usual to reach the login screen or your desktop. This is because your Mac performs a directory check of your startup disk as part of safe mode.

To leave safe mode, restart your computer without pressing any keys during startup.

Leave Safe Mode and test the issue again. If it persists I would next reset the PRAM and the SMC on your computer in that order, and test it out one more time:

How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac

    then

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

If none of that works then there may be a process that is using all of your system resources and the Activity Monitor may help you determine what that may be:

Use Activity Monitor on your Mac

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities, all the best!

If updating requires your information, make your wife's account an admin account.

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read.
