Q: Macbook Keyboard - Shut down issue

Hi,

I am writing from India. I have a Macbook Mid-2010 model (Unibody).

I am facing an auto shut down issue with it.

The Macbook runs well when i press any key.

Once the key is released, it automatically shuts down at any point, either in boot up or in running state.

I have even formatted the Hard drive and Loaded with OSX Snow Leopard (10.6), which came along with the Macbook.

There is no issue with the Logic board or Hard drive or RAM as the system runs perfect when any key in the keyboard is pressed.

Regards,

Ananth

    Hi Scottie,

    1.  Do you ever get the shutdown screen that has the 60 second countdown timer - or is it always the shutdown options screen without the countdown timer?  - Sometimes i get. Sometimes Not.

    2.  You updated to Yosemite a while back - and the MacBook was fine for several months.  Did you ever attempt to upgrade to El Capitan?  Specifically an upgrade to the initial release of 10.11  (not 10.11.1 or later)?   There were some known power management issues with the initial release of El Capitan?  These were fixed as of 10.11.3. - I have not installed El Captain Yet. And i didn't try to.

    3.  When you say you reinstalled new software and updated?  Did you reinstall 10.6.3 and then update to 10.6.8 or did you update to Yosemite or later? - Installed 10.6.3 and updated to 10.6.8

    4.  Have you tried doing a clean install of Yosemite or El Capitan (which may re-update firmware) which may possibly fix something?  Did you ever create a bootable install USB stick for Yosemite or El Capitan?  There is a very easy way to create a USB install stick?  I am just wondering if a complete clean install of Yosemite or El Capitan might help (as suggested by My Ginger). - No i did not try a clean Install yet for El Captain. But i tried Yosemite. Same Problem was there. so i again re-formatted and freshly installed 10.6.3

This would mean that it is a hardware problem. As all that you have done would rule out software and firmware. That link I gave you may be the only work around other than finding a way to keep a key that you do not use down. Since at the present time getting a replacement top case is not possible. That download is suppose to disable the shutdown without disabling the power button.

According to a post (on another blog) the Power Block app simply uses the "sudo pmset powerbutton 0" or "sudo -c pmset powerbutton 0" to change the behavior of the power button.  The -c option changes the behavior of the power button only when the MacBook is running on the charger.  Maybe it would be worth trying the pmset command as shown above - first - before resorting to the Power Block app.  Note that the "powerbutton" argument has been removed from the pmset command as of OS X 10.9 - and thus the Power Block app only works on OS X 10.6 thru 10.8.
