Q: Photo library shows empty spaces for some picture files

Some files in Photos (a section in 2014 for example) appear as blank boxes. There are clearly spaces where the photos are (I can select and highlight them) and I can also see the information (JPEG, file size, etc) but I can't see the picture or open it. When I tried to export one to my desktop it says:

The export operation failed to create a file for the photo identified below:

Error: Could not load image

This problem shows up for about 1 month then things seems fine. It is not associated with one specific device or import either. Is there a way to recover these photos?

I recommend you update the system to 10.11.3 which brings with it Photos 1.3. Both have bug fixes and new features that make the update very worth while.

What OS and version of Photos? Are you using iCloud Photo Library and if so are pictures optimized or full sized on your Mac?

I am not using iCloud Photo Library
OS: Yosemite 10.10.5 (14F1509)
Photos: Version 1.0.1 (215.65.0)

Updating is good practice OT.

Sadly I'm as up to date as a member of the public can be, and still have the problems. I have photos every year from 2000 and a couple of year views have blank patches.

I updated from Aperture a month or two ago...

Try repairing the library according to the instructions in this Apple document: Repair Your Library.

Warning: If you use iCloud Photo Library with Photos, this action will cause Photos to upload all your pictures again (from Fix missing or incorrect thumbnails in Photos - Apple Support).

Thanks for the suggestions. I upgraded to the most recent operating system version and have updated all of the programs. Repaired the photos library but this did not restore the pictures.

In becoming apparent that those photos are missing or damaged and can't be use. Unless you have a backup library that has the missing photos that you can restore and recover the photos with you'll have to write off those photos.
