Thanks for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
If you're using the Mail application, you can update your email account password by going to Mail > Accounts and choosing the account you want to modify in the left-hand column. You may also find the information in this Support article helpful: If Mail on your Mac keeps asking for your password.
All the best.

Mar 23, 2016 2:14 PM in response to jeremy_vby Mark Looper,I am using Apple Mail on two Macs running El Capitan. Selecting menu items "Mail > Accounts..." takes me to the "Internet Accounts" pane of the System Preferences. I highlight the account (Google or Yahoo!) in the left column, and it shows me a list of applications that can use this account, with check boxes to select the ones I'm interested in (I'm only using Mail). There is also a button labeled "Details...", but the dialog that this brings up only has editable fields for my name and a description of the account. Where do I actually change the password stored by OS X so that Apple Mail can continue to use the account after I changed the password at the Google or Yahoo! website? Right now it seems that the only options I have found are to delete and recreate the account entry in System Preferences.

May 6, 2016 7:58 AM in response to Mxhannanby bpgf,After changing my password at my providers website, I did the following:
Mail > Preferences > Account Information > Enter new password in password field > Click drop-down list for Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) > Edit SMTP Server list > Choose your server > Advanced > Enter new password
I'm not very computer literate so I don't know if things will be a little different for you if you are using Google or Yahoo! (my email is through my cable company). All I know is that going to Internet Accounts did not provide the fields I needed to edit. I had to do everything through Preferences. Also, if you only edit your password in the Account Information area, you will be able to receive mail but not send. You have to be sure to edit the Outgoing Mail Server password in order to send mail.
