Q: Finder constantly frozen. 10.9.5

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina 13" 10.9.5)

As of this morning my finder has been constantly frozen. Once restarted it works for about 10-30 seconds then remains frozen. I initially thought that it might be a corrupted preference file, and restarted several times, and tried deleting the com.apple.finder.plist and that didn’t work either.

When I relaunch finder, it works for a couple of seconds and freezes up, I can no longer select files, navigate folders, or do anything whatsoever.

Has anybody had this problem before? How did they resolve it?

Thanks,

—Bobby

Did you restart after deleting the .plist file?

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Thanks a million Eric, this has proven very helpful. I really appreciate it!

The problem does not exist with a safe mode reboot. So I imagine that this has something to do with my user applications / settings.

However, when I restarted regularly after the safe mode reboot, the problem has changed slightly. Finder no longer freezes up, but instead, relaunches itself approximately every minute. This makes it much easier for me to navigate files, but I still need to resolve this problem.

Is there a method to figure out what is causing the problem, instead of deleting my 3rd party apps?

    Thanks again,

    —Bobby

You are welcome. Did you try setting up another admin account? Results?

I've got the exact same problem, except mine is occurring on a 2 year old iMac. Just started out of nowhere, and I'm not aware that I installed any software or updated any settings. I thought it might be a drive problem at first, but it appears to be happening when I select directories both on the internal hard drive as well as a connected USB drive. Not 100% certain yet, but it almost appears to only happen in Finder, as I have not seen other apps hanging that use the hard drive, although again I have not tested this theory very much yet.

You might want to start your own post. A new post would be much more visible. You can link to this one.

Right now on Mavericks this is the first thing to check

Finder freezing or hanging - check Google Drive
