Mar 21, 2016 5:13 PM in response to bignumbersby Demo,If you have already imported your photos and videos to your Mac, following the instructions in the article that you were reading when you posted your question, you can delete the photos on the iPhone without that having any effect on the photos on the Mac.
Just to be clear, this is the article that I am talking about.
Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your computer - Apple Support
However, if you are using iCloud Photo Library, unless you download the photos to the Mac from iCloud.com, the photos will be deleted everywhere no matter on which device you delete them.
Not trying to be snide, but it really helps if you explain exactly how you are managing your photos before we can give solid answers to your question because there are different ways to manage photos.

Mar 21, 2016 5:51 PM in response to Demoby bignumbers,Thanks so much for the reply but when I turned off icloud and started the download of 15,000 photos I realized this is not a good solution for me.. SO after more searching I tried the Google photos app and so far it is freaking awesome. Instead of downloading 15k photos- the Goggle app linked to my Picasa app (I think??) and it is loading a back up to my google account. After it is complete I plan to end my icloud account for use of photo syncing as it is way to complex and no longer meets my needs in terms of keeping a photo library without using all iphone capacity. While still an iphone fan, my hats off to Google photos as they have the better solution for storage and freeing up phone storage.

For the record, I do not use iCloud Photo Library and plan on never using it. If I can't store my photos in Apple's cloud to get them off of my devices, I have no use for it whatsoever. In all fairness, I am not a photographer or a big time photo taker so I have plenty of space to store my photos on my Mac and my external drives, so the whole cloud issue is a non issue for me.
Best of luck to you.
