Q: Bluetooth speaker sound goes juddery on iPad sometimes

I have been using an Inveo Bluetooth speaker for a few years with my iPad, and until very recently it has worked without a hitch.  Typically, I have the speaker turned off, and I turn it on when I want to listen to, say, a YouTube video, and the iPad then instantly notices it and switches the sound over to it.  Lately, however, I go to turn the speaker on, about as I've launched into the YouTube video, and s-s-u-u-d-d-e-e-n-n-l-l-y-y  t-t-h-h-e-e  s-s-o-o-u-u-n-n-d-d  g-g-o-o-e-e-s-s  j-j-u-u-d-d-e-e-r-r-y-y, which is to say, it sounds rather like someone has placed his head against the top of an electric fan housing to get a vibratey-voice effect.  The only thing that has really changed lately is I've gotten a budget Android tablet that I've placed down near where I have my iPad, and it also has bluetooth turned on (so it can use a bluetooth keyboard I got for it) (and I also have a separate Bluetooth keyboard for my iPad that I've had for years), but that might just be a coincidence.  Nothing else has changed, other than of course the iOS updates and YouTube app updates.  It doesn't do this steady-choppy sound all the time, it seems to just be SOMEtimes.... like maybe on some videos and not others, I'm not really sure.  Any tips on how to determine what's going on with this?  I've got the Bluetooth speaker charging at the moment to see if maybe it's a low charge that's the issue or something.  Anyone else having a similar problem? Oo

    Hi NomadOfNorad,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.   I understand you are having issues with audio sound quality with your Inveo Bluetooth speaker.  (I loved the way you explained the sound you are hearing!:)   From your comments, it sounds like the issue started when you introduced the new Android tablet.   So, the first thing I would suggest is to unpair the Android tablet and see what happens when you go back to your original setup with just the Inveo and the iPad.    Try this for a week or so and see if the issue is resolved.

If you come across a playback issue when listening to a YouTube or other media, make a note of the website, and try listening to that content on a different device like your Android tablet or your computer, to determine if the issue is with the content or the device.   Hopefully, this approach will help you isolate and resolve the issue.

The resources below will provide some additional resources for troubleshooting Bluetooth issues with your iOS devices.

Well, the only thing I've ever coupled to the Android tablet is a Bluetooth keyboard I bought for it.  I have never used the Bluetooth speaker with anything except the iPad.  That keyboard is usually switched off until I need to use it with the Android tablet.  Turning Bluetooth completely off just now seems to have no clear effect on the judderiness of the Youtube audio.

    Hi Nomad,

If you come across a playback issue when listening to a YouTube or other media, make a note of the website, and try listening to that content on a different device like your Android tablet or your computer, to determine if the issue is with the content or the device.

Have you tried listening to the Youtube video on a different device to see if the issue is with the Inveo speaker?  Have you tried more than one youtube video?  How about a different video website like Vimeo to see if the issue is with the Youtube website?

    Best,

Thing is, when I was doing this earlier, it always seemed as if the audio in the video was playing fine when simply played through the iPad's built in speakers, but would immediately go all juddery if I switched to the Bluetooth speaker, then go back to playing fine if I turned the Bluetooth speaker back off.  The one I was particularly having this problem with was a non-public video at some place I'm alpha-testing software for, so I can't direct you to that one.

Here's one that gives me trouble:

    And here's one that doesn't:

...but then, now I find that after coming back to the first one, having returned to it somewhere in the middle again, and then playing it just on the iPad speakers, it seemed to be a bit vibrary-sounding there too.  But maybe its just the app being screwy at that moment.  oO

Here's another one, tho, that plays fine on the iPad speakers, but goes juddery on the Bluetooth speaker, then goes back to playing fine on the iPad's own speakers again when I switch off the Bluetooth speakers again.
