Please open the Sound pane in System Preferences and select the Input tab. Select the input device you want (it should be highighted in the list) and move the Input volume slider all the way to the right.

Speak into the microphone. You shouldn't have to yell. Does the Input level meter react?

If not, and if there are any other input devices in the list, do they work? What are they?

Can I still record audio from an internal mic AND video from the screen at the same time? If not, why not? I'm recording my own audio with my own video content - 100% legal. Taking away this function is a serious downgrade.

I too am having this issue on a clean install of Sierra on my MacBook Pro. I have gone into the sound pane and slid the slider all they way to the right and I see no action. The internal mic is listed but it's not working. I have tried a video in photo booth and it did not pick up and sound. Any other ideas?

You should post a new question and use the Sierra forum instead of this one.

Also, post a screenshot of your Sound preferences.

Sorry for the vague post as the issue was also happening in el capitan. I have since corrected the issue and it wasn't software related it was hardware. I had my top case replaced a few months back and after looking up and ifixit guide I found that the microphone ribbon cable was not plugged in. All I had to  do was pull the fan out and plug the cable back and presto the mic is working now.
