Q: Why is it so hard for Apple to create a simple way for people to get the edited version of images edited in the camera roll onto a PC or external drive?

With all the other much more complicated features in the IOS operating system, why is it so hard for Apple to create a simple way for people to get the edited version of images edited in the camera roll onto a PC or external drive? I mean seriously, the official answer is 'email them to yourself'; manually, five at a time? Honestly, essentially what is the point of the entire camera roll edit feature and all the advanced auto-correct features etc... when anyone goes to use these images on any other device or any other format, all of the editing is lost? Really, this is ludicrous, why has no one in the entire organization even seriously addressed this major flaw?

Well, Apple addressed it a year ago with iOS 8, but you probably do not like the solution either. But the current solution is to keep your photo library in iCloud and sync all your edits from iCloud Photo Library. This is automatic, and you do not have to worry about the camera roll any longer.  Thre is no camera roll album in an iCloud Photo Library. It is hidden, because you do not need to access it.

This is no answer. Apple goes out of their way to push the iPhone with advertising about the camera, which is exceptional for a phone), yet something as simple as access to photos taken with that iPhone camera is all but impossible. There is no way for many iPhones to use the cable anymore to import photos to Windows photo import. And if you are keeping optimized versions of your pictures on your iPhone, you are really in a bind. Even if you purchase an app to use your WiFi to transfer photos to the computer, all you are getting are small files. Even when editing the photos on iPhone, there is often a delay while the photo is downloaded to the phone from iCloud. This delay even occurs at times on an iPhone with the full resolution files local. There is no excuse for this negligence. Apple can produce excellent phones and other technology and needs to be more responsible with regard to the software it forces you to use.

I can't comment on the Windows side of your reply, but for Mac users iCloud Photo Library is working well to keep the edits in sync across the devices.

As a windows user you should be able to download the edited versions of your iPhone photos from www.icloud.com.

    You ark

Why is it so hard for Apple to create a simple way for people to get the edited version of images edited in the camera roll onto a PC or external drive?

The answer is they did - it is called iCloud Photo Library and is trivially simple - everything just syncs automatically with no user interaction at all - nothing could be simpler

As to the PC side - your question is misplaced since the Mac is not cross compatible with a PC - Your question for the PC should be "why is it so hard for Microsoft to make anything simple?" and posted in a MS forum.
