Q: just a greyed out screen upon launch of iMessage

Running 10.9.5

had network connection issues originally and needed an OS update.  Ran update and now iMessage is locked on the "Sign in" screen.  Its just grey and has my icloud username already inserted in the Apple ID box but it will not allow me to go any further.

I use imessage all day from my office and its making me crazy!

Help please.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

    Hi,

Try resetting the NVRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

This did not work.  I went a step further and did a Disk Verify and a Disk Repair on permissions... This is weird.

    hi,

In Applications/Utilities open the Keychain Access app.

Does this say the Login Keychain is unlocked or not ?

It should be unlocked and normally has the same Password as the Mac User Account login (I.e. Logging in normally unlocks the Keychain so apps can use it)

    Humm,

Open Font Book and scroll down the list to find AppleGothic

    Is it active ?

Does it Validate (File Menu) ?

    Is it duplicated ?

Repeat for Helvetica Neue and Lucida Grande

In a Finder Window use the Go Menu whilst holding down the ALT key and select the Library that now appears in the list.

    Navigate to Preferences.

Use Quick Look on the com.apple.ids.service.com.apple.madrid.plist file

Does this list your Apple ID  in one of the keys and it's subsets ?  (Under the title "Aliases")

It may also show any iPhone previously linked to the Apple ID

    Further down is com.apple.imessage.bag.plist

Try deleting this one and Restarting Messages.  This holds the server info that you were previously connected to and deleting it will force a refresh on restarting Messages.

It does list a second icloud account I had in this section.

I deleted this and it is still grey upon restarting iMessage....

So I spent about 3 hours last night with Apple support with no fix... We have determined imessage work on my phone and ipad.. not on my iMac.  Facetime is also broken.  I did an OS update and reinstalled the OS.

Not sure what to do know...

    Hi,

If the last update you did was the OS X 10.9.3 one then Install the Combo version over the top https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1746?locale=en_US

If you have updated beyond this then search for "Mac OS X 10.x.x" where the x's are the currently level you are at.
