Q: iphone wifi sync works in windows, not in os10

for a while now i've struggled to figure this out, aside from the obvious and well-known troubleshooting steps - i cannot get my iphone to connect and appear in itunes over wifi (with wireless sync enabled) - only in OS 10.

when i boot into windows 10 and start itunes, my phone appears in itunes (over wifi) and I can sync with it.

anyone have some suggestions for fixing this on the OS 10 side ?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.3), Windows 10

    Couple of questions

When you say OS 10 do you mean OS X?

Also can you please tell us what steps you have tried so that we do not suggest the same thing over again?

    yes - OS X (10.11.4).

I have tried what's listed here:

Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes using Wi-Fi - Apple Support

in OS 10 I do not have a 3rd party firewall, so I do not think ports are an issue. both operating systems are on a macbook pro and both are using the latest itunes version. my itunes media location is the same (on a NAS), while the itunes library files in windows reside on the windows installation partition; in OS 10 the itunes library files reside on the macintosh HD partition.

so the library files are not being shared between operating systems, they are independent but go to the same NAS location for the media files.

    Sorry for the delay

What has worked for me - on the Mac

Is to go into iTunes with the phone connected with a cord

Then UN Check the sync over WiFi box

    Then reboot the computer

Then repeat the process and check the box while the phone is connected with a cord

That has reset it successfully once when that happened to me

    no need to apologize ....

i will try it one more time and see if that fixes the issue ? I've tried before and it didn't.

so i would leave the phone plugged in during the entire reboot and start itunes ..... does it matter ?

Yes - leave it plugged it - that part of it usually does not matter

Back up the iPhone to iTunes

    Then restore as new

See if the factory reset iPhone appears on WiFi in iTunes on the Mac

If problem is resolved - restore backup

no success after doing all this.

the restore process is not as seamless as you'd think and it took a couple of connect/disconnect sessions with iTunes in order to sync everything back on my phone to be in the state it was in when I backed it up. I don't look forward to doing that again.

my windows iTunes wireless sync is working fine, the library itl it uses is the same file that iTunes uses when I'm in OS 10 ....

so it must be something on the mac OS side that's not right.

something i had not mentioned before which i am uncertain whether it impacts this issue or not -

the iphone i currently have is a warranty replacement that i got back in february because i had issues with my previous iphone.

however i cannot recall when this wifi sync issue i have started, wasn't paying attention. i know that with the previous phone it was able to connect to wifi sync on the mac OS side - i just can't tell you whether or not it stopped working while i had the first phone.

perhaps the IMEI or serial number is checked/used by OS 10 or by iCloud or by the keychain ? but i don't think it would matter what the device identifier is unless that's what's needed to complete a secure wifi connection for sync ?

it would appear that this was a bug with either ios or mac os because with my macbook pro running 10.11.5, itunes 12.4.1.6 and my phone running 9.3.3, wifi sync works fine in mac os.

i don't recall what the latest software was back a few months ago when i had this issue, i know my phone and macbook pro were running the latest and wifi sync did not work in mac os.

thanks to Apple for fixing that. would have been nice to know this was a bug ....
