Q: Question on Apple Music family plan

My son has an individual plan with his Apple ID and I want to change it to the family plan.  Does his Apple ID have to be the lead ID on the family share plan setup?  Or can I use mine and he just be a member?

    Hello bridgeb3,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

I see you're thinking about creating a Family Sharing group.  To learn more about creating a Family, and the details of it, please look through the information in the link below.

Thank you for the reply and that information was helpful, but does not really answer my question.  I have the family plan setup already, my question is more related to Apple Music Family Plan in that my son has the subscription, but I am the family organizer.  Can I upgrade his individual subscription to family with him not also being the family organizer?  And still have the rest of the family enjoy Apple Music.

    Thanks,
    Barry

    Hi Barry,

Thanks for providing more information on what you're trying to accomplish.  If your son has his own individual Apple Music membership, then it appears that he is not part of your Family sharing group.  The family organizer is the person who creates the Family group, in this case, you:

One adult in the family—the family organizer—can set up Family Sharing for the group from their iOS device or Mac. When you set up Family Sharing, you'll be asked to confirm that you agree to pay for purchases initiated by the family members you invite and that you have a valid payment method on file.

    Set up Family Sharing

To use a Family membership, you first need to set up Family Sharing. Then, when you join Apple Music, choose a Family membership. When your family members join Apple Music, they need to use the same Apple ID that they used to join Family Sharing. After they join Apple Music and sign in with their Apple ID, they'll automatically be added to your Family membership.

    About Apple Music

He would need to cancel his individual Apple Music membership, before he is able to join your Family Apple Music membership.  Keep in mind that his Apple Music preferences and songs will be saved for 90 days.

Change from an Individual Membership to a Family Membership

With a Family Membership to Apple Music, families of up to six people can enjoy all of the benefits of Apple Music, each with their own library. If you joined Apple Music as an individual member, you can change to a Family Membership at any time. You can also switch back to an Individual Membership if you choose. You can also join an existing Family Membership.

To use a Family Membership to Apple Music, you must set up Family Sharing on your iOS device or Mac.

Manage your Apple Music membership on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC

    Take care.
