Q: Why is the new Photos app so slow on my Mac?

Why is the new Photos app so slow on my Mac.  Have all the latest updates. Takes 10-15 minutes for my photos to load overtime I open the app.  Frozen while they are loading.  They are all on my computer. Not coming from the cloud.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

The failing disk drive can cause the Mac to run slowly.

Get it replaced before it fails completely.

Well, your iMac is 8 years old so is probably equivalent to me in the scheme of things and life expectancy, i.e. getting long in the tooth.

You could have a new hard drive installed, either a regular spinning hard drive (I'd get a 7200 rep model if you go that route) or a solid state device drive which would be very fast as far as booting up and launching applications.  However, you can only utilize 6 GB of RAM on that machine and would definitely need to upgrade from 4 to 6 GB if you were to upgrade the necessary parts.  If you do upgrade only get the RAM from crucial.con or otherworldcomputing.com.

Apple won't install a new HD but an Apple Authorized Service Provider will.  You can do the RAM upgrade yourself and save lots of $$.  I'd check out what it would cost to fix/uipgrade your machine and then weigh it against getting a new iMac or even an Apple refurbished iMac.

Looks like I can get the drive replaced locally at reasonable cost.

Current drive is 350gb and nowhere near full. I am thinking of putting in a 500gb SSD.

My current thinking is to make a clone of the drive as it is, and the reload the new one with that. If the problem persists then surely that shows it is not a hardware problem. No problem, as I have a Time Machine backup of the applications and data which I can reload from. I just nuke the new disk and reload.

    Is this a good approach?

    Thanks.

If the problem persists, I recommend that you download and install EtreCheck from http://etrecheck.com/

Run it and post the report here. It might point to other problems.

You say you are making a clone and then you talk about restoring from Time Machine. A Time Machine backup is not a clone. So until you clarify exactly what you plan to do, there is no way for me to reply about your plan.

When you say nuke the new disk, exactly what does that mean to you?

    Sorry I was unclear eselier.

I did Etrecheck some time back. And posted it here. That is what said disk failure.

I know the difference between cloning and Time Machine. My plan is this.

    1. Do a full Time Macine backup.

    2. Clone the disk.

    3. Install the new disk.

    4. Rebuild from the clone. If this does not work then wipe the new disk, re-install OSX and then reload data and apps from Time machine.

    Good approach?

These reports are from two different Macs.

    Hardware Information:

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014)

    Hardware Information:

        MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009)

Can't compare the two reports to look for improvements due to Safe Mode.

The first Mac can definitely benefit from increasing the RAM to at least 8 GB, more if the budget permits.  If you do I recommend getting the RAM from Crucial.com or otherworldcomputing.com.
