Q: Kernel Panics!

hello there!

Hope you can help me with this.

I just changed hd on my mbp ( 15", mid 2010, 2.4ghz I5, 8gb ram, OSX 10.9.5) with a Samsung SSD 850 Evo.

Since then I have been experimenting a lot of kernel panics (never happened before).

Here is the latest log

You have the misfortune of having a model identifier 6.2 MBP that is having GPU problems. There was a logic board replacement program on these models but that has expired.

To solve this problem, you can have the logic board replaced at your expense.

As a temporary measure you can download and install this application:

    https://gfx.io/

This will allow you to disengage the discrete GPU and run the MBP using only the integrated one. This will result in a degradation of graphic performance.

    Ciao.

On occasions, the problem does manifest itself with the installation of a new OSX.  You could revert to a prior OSX, but I do not know if that will cure the problem.   If you choose to try that, please let me know the results, good or bad.

    Hi Budisalm:

I assume you have a 13" Macbook Pro 2012. The GPU is only on some of the 15" models.

    You should be safe.

    Hi Budisalm:

Yes, you can change your HD to an SSD.

I have a Early 2011 13 inch Macbook Pro and I have done the same.

OWC is a good place to go for upgrading your Macbook Pro.

    OWC SSD's: OWC SSD's

SSD for MacBook Pro with Non-Retina 13” & 15” Mid 2012 to Current: OWC SSD's

I upgraded my Early 2011 13 inch Macbook Pro using a Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB SSD and I have seen a dramatic speed increase.

Once you decide on an SSD, I suggest that you install it in an enclosure OWC external case or using a USB to SATA adapter USB to SATA adapter and connect it to your MBP via USB.

Open Disk Utility>Erase and format the SSD to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and a GUID partition.

Then use a third party application such as Carbon Copy Cloner Carbon Copy Cloner (Not free, but worth the price) or Super Duper to copy all data from the internal HDD as well as the recovery partition.

The clone will be a exact copy of your hard drive and it will be bootable.

Boot the MBP with the OPTION key (Startup Manager) and select the new SSD. How to choose a startup disk on your Mac

If it boots the MBP, perform the physical swap of drives.

Also now that you have your computer open you may want to upgrade the memory. It is very easy.

OWC OWC memory or crucial Crusial Mac memory are good places to get memory.

You could look at a video guide to see how much is involved.

    OWC install videos

Note the model identifier of the computer you have as most applications are shown in page.

Check this link to identify your MacBook Pro model.

You are using OS X 10.11.3 which supports TRIM.

So don't forget to enable TRIM when you install your SSD.

To enable TRIM, first save all your open documents as this will reboot your Mac.

    1) launch Terminal.

    2) Type "sudo trimforce enable".

    3) Confirm that you want to enable trim.

    4) Reboot your Mac.

To verify that TRIM is enabled, click the Apple icon in the top left of your screen. Choose "About this Mac" -> "System Report" -> "SATA/SATA Express" and look for the entry "Trim Support". It should say "yes" if trim has been enabled.

Also you can upgrade to OS X 10.11.4 from Apps menu.
