Q: Unable to log into iMessage since Yosemite security update 2016-002

Yesterday I installed Yosemite security update 2016-002. Since then, I have been unable to log into iMessage on my Mac with my AppleID. When I try, I get the message:

Could not sign in to iMessage.

Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again.

I have confirmed that my AppleID still works in other applications, on my iPhone, and at icloud.com. I changed the password and confirmed that again.

I have done multiple reboots (including safe mode) and tried many of the fixes from these older apple.com posts (including nuking the imagent process and plist, checking the firewall, trying alternate DNS servers, etc.) but no luck:

So... I know that the latest Yosemite and iOS security updates were released largely to address iMessage vulnerabilities. Did they break something in iMessage authentication? Is there a fix?

Addendum: I see that there are several threads about similar problems in El Capitan but I don't see one for Yosemite.

Good news: this morning I am able to log in and send iMessages. I see other people reporting the same thing, so evidently Apple fixed something server-side.

A tip: in order to have SMS messages to my phone forwarded to Messages on my Mac, I had to re-enable it on my phone:

iOS > Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding

    Seems like a happy ending.
