What does the resolution lights on the Direct TV unit indicate it is outputting when using it?

    1080i

Also when you pressed menu and up for 5 seconds then released the buttons, how long did you wait to check all the resolutions?

I let it cycle for several minutes. The picture remained black the entire time.

Also are you saying the display remained blank the entire time?

    Yes

You don't even see anything (even static or a blip) when powering up the ATV?

Nothing.  Once, early on in this effort, I actually had a picture from the ATV on the screen.  It appeared it was operating normally.  I immediately left the room to grab a cup of coffee.  When I returned a few minutes later the screen was again blank.  I've not seen a blip on the screen since then.

    It's HDMI 1.3:

The fact that the Direct TV unit works does not rule out a TV defect since it is using 1080i not 1080p which the ATV uses.

The fact that the TV did display the ATV and then lost it also suggests a defective TV unless that coffee you went for ended up getting spilled on the ATV.

Your tests prove the ATV works fine on other TV's and if you can set them at 1080p 60Hz on those TV's without issue, this rules out the ATV.

The fact you don't see any response from the screen when booting the ATV and changing settings again points to the TV.  You should see something if the signal is changing.

Like all bad news in life the toughest part is to accept it.  I think we have to accept your tv is bad and move on to other things...

Thanks for that link.  I think you are correct. No spilled coffee here:)

I do appreciate all the time you've given to help me assess the issues here.  Take care!

I Have similar problem. I have Panasonic plasma with Directv on hdmi 1 and Apple TV on hdmi 2. I had a 3rd generation Apple TV that worked fine. I replaced it with the 4th generation and when I switch to hdmi 2 to access the Apple TV it switches back to hdmi 1 and Directv . I took the 4th generation atv and connected t to a samsung and it works fine. Any explanation?

Does your Gen 3 ATV work if you reconnect it where it was before you replaced it with the Gen 4?  In my case neither Gen 3 or 4 will work on my TV.  TV is from 2007 so who knows.  Good luck.
