Q: Songs keep repeating when I shuffle a playlist

On every iPod and iPhone I've ever owned:

I open a playlist and set it to shuffle. It does. I pause a song, put the device away, and press play a few hours or days later. The device remembers what I've already played so I don't hear the same song twice until I get through all, say, 250 songs on the playlist (unless I select a different playlist, manually select a song on the playlist, or close the iTunes app on my phone). As an illustration, using my iPhone 6 (still on iOS 8.3) last month I spent a week of commuting time, about 45 minutes a day, listening through a playlist and never heard the same song twice.

On my iPhone 6 since updating to iOS 8.4 (12H143):

I open a playlist and set it to shuffle. It does. I pause a song, put the device away, and press play a few hours or days later. It doesn't seem to remember what it's already played, so I end up hearing the same set of about 25-30 songs (with occasional randoms thrown in) every time I pause, put it away, and press play a few hours or days later.

Why doesn't Music seem to remember what it's already played? Is there any way of fixing this, or working around the issue so I don't have to keep hearing the same songs on a playlist?

On a possibly related note, I just connected my phone to my computer, and noticed that several of the songs that keep getting repeated show up in iTunes as having never been played. Has Music/iTunes stopped counting, or is this feature just not working any longer?

I think I may be having the same problem.

I always have my music on shuffle (so all music shuffled, not just a specific playlist)

I did the update a month or so ago to 9.2 or whatever and that's when it screwed up.

So basically in the morning commute, I have it set to shuffle and one song will play, and this will either repeat later that journey or on my journey home. I know there's loads of songs that haven't been played because it's the same ones over and over.

This is so frustrating. I've tried resets and resyncs and nothing.

    So ridiculous.

I loaded up iOS version 9.3yesterday. First thing I noticed was it cut my play list sizes by 1/4 to 1/3. For example a playlist that used to have 40 songs, now has 28. Checked iTunes on my lap top to verify. Sure enough the playlist in question had 40 songs. The majority of my play lists were similarly effected. I then tried syncing my iPhone to my lap top via iTunes. After doing so, my iTunes play lists now matched the size of the play lists on my iPhone... not what I was hoping for! I am now resigned to having to go back and rebuild my playlists in iTunes so they are the size that I want them to be. Of course my concern is my iPhone will merely cut them back down to size again! I'll have to think long and hard before I try that again. Looks to me as though Apple has merely added to their music player woes.

Regarding other music player apps. I have had decent luck with Cesium. It appears to shuffle ok without repeating or skipping songs. It uses the same up next song list as Apple's music player, though so Apple's music player can still screw up the upcoming song list if given the opportunity. I try not to run the Apple music player app as a result. Other music apps I've tried that did not work well were Ecoute, VOX, EasyMP3, 3D Audio Player and Beat.

One other nice feature with Cesium is it shows how may songs are in the upcoming song lists. What's more it also shows the remaining time in the play list. Thus makes it much easier to determine if repeated songs are in the upcoming list as well as determining if it is skipping songs. I see Apple's music player app still does not do that.

Still an overall issue with Shuffle in 9.3.

Still hearing repeated tracks when shuffling all tracks (approx 2,000 - 5 days worth).

And just got this (again, out of the pool of 5 days worth of music):

Track 1 - Hot (feat Pusha T & Boo-bonic). Rosco P Coldchain. The Neptunes Presents The Clones.

    Track 2 - Hot & Fun feat Nelly Furtardo (10'). N*E*R*D. Nothing.

Track 3 - Hot. The Neptunes. The Neptunes Present The Clones.

Track 4 - Hot-N-Fun (feat Nelly Furtardo). N*E*R*D. Nothing (Deluxe edition).

"Shuffle", yeah right, give me a break!

I think I figured it out. My songs shuffle but do not repeat the same songs now. The shuffle and repeat should be grey. I've attached a picture. Don't judge me by my my music.

Unfortunately I'm still getting the issue ..... just had one song play .... 5 songs later (with 2,000 track in My Music) the exact same song.

I did what Cahill suggested and I'm on my way home from work and the same songs are playing as what I listened to last night but a whole 24hrs later.

This is so frustrating. I like my music shuffled but spend half the time skipping to listen to something different!!

Hi there from what I'm seeing and what I have researched 9.3 does not mention a fix for the repeat shuffle. So I guess it's back to the ole drawing board, I'll be making a phone call to find out what happened?  I don't want to stop using my ipod but this is very annoying smh. I recently upgraded to a Galaxy S7, maybe I'll have to use my S4 as an mp3 player at least I won't have to worry about a repetitive shuffle grrrrr!

So to all my fellow music lovers are you ready to make some phones calls? Maybe we should pick a day to call at the same time lol

On Thursday I put My Music on Shuffle All. Over the course of about 5 hours playing time I had about 30 or so of the same songs play more than once, including some which seemed to crop up about 4 or 5 times.

This is so sad!!  I guess I will keep using Spotify.  Its not a perfect system either but if I have to hear some repeats at least I get to have additional songs that I don't own.  Mind blowing apple can't ( won't ) fix this.  Thanks for the updates everyone!

    Dear fellow shufflers,

Happy to see I am not alone with this issue. Drives me up the wall since a couple of months. Writing this down is just for therapeutic reasons. So, here I go...

Apple, for the love of God, please, please, please fix this issue!!!!!

Shuffling music is no rocket science, it has been done since the invention of the jukebox at the end of the 1900's. Please, please, please try to make this work again in your 21st century stuff.

If not for me, then fix it for the 1,000,000's of other Apple users. Help us close this shameful discussion.

    Thanks,

    Jeffrey Ottevanger

Just wanted to chime in that I've also been having this problem for close to a year now, before I even joined Apple Music. Yet another victim of a lousy Shuffle feature that Apple doesn't seem to care about fixing. I've sunk too much money into looking for another music player, I really hope they fix this before I die of old age.

Try telling Siri 'shuffle all my music'  seemed to work for me.

That worked for me until I hit any other button in my Apple music player. I ran some tests this morning and as soon as I hit pause, skip, repeat or anything else my music started repeating just 3 or 4 songs later. It seems that any interference causes the songs in the Up Next list to lock up and the player will only play a shuffled mixture of the Up Next list of songs rather than a shuffled mixture of the entire playlist.
