Q: I seem to have two versions of numbers????

Can anyone help be sort this please.

I have two Numbers Icons in the system tray. Not sure how to tell my Mac to get rid of the old version as I think it is still using that one by default.

Any help much appreciated.

Running Elcapitan btw on a Macbook Air

    Hi Timbo,

It sounds like you have both Numbers 3 (in your Applications folder) and Numbers '09 (in a subfolder called iWork '09).

My advice is to keep both versions. You may sometimes appreciate Numbers '09 with its  superior print layout ability.

See this User Tip by Wayne for working with both versions of Numbers:

Need newer version of Numbers to open file

    Regards,

    Ian.

The Numbers '09 application icon has 3 bars, and the newer Numbers v3 icon has 4 bars.

    Icons on my Dock:

Both versions will run either separately or together. Just be sure which version you use to open a document.

Ah ah! Yes I now see exactly what you are saying.

I was actually looking for programs I could delete to make some space on my machine which is a bit clogged up at the mo so I will get rid of iWork's I think though it's good to know that it has some advantages. That also explains the presence of the pages ink pot btw!

Thanks so much for the advice. Timbo

    Hi Timbo,

Before you delete apps, post a new question in either the El Capitan forum or the Macbook Air forum, asking for advice on how to make more space on your machine.

    Thanks for the gold star!

    Regards,

    Ian.

Added comment (I missed the Edit time-out): If you must delete one version of Numbers, I suggest that you first use Numbers 3 to Export your documents to Numbers '09 (in Numbers 3, Menu > File > Export > Numbers' 09)

Then delete Numbers 3 if that will make more space on your machine.

You can reinstall Numbers 3 at a future time from the App Store.

The App Store no longer keeps Numbers '09 and you will find it difficult to get a copy.
