I'm not sure what you mean by changing the ID. See if either of these help or post back with more details .

The link KiltedTim provided is probably the way to go EXCEPT Step 5 will erase the iPhone. You may be able to restore if you made the backup in Step 2 or you can just try omitting step 5 and see what happens. You may have to reset some of the Family sharing features depending on what you do with your son's old phone (I assume he has one since he already has a n Apple ID).
