Q: iMac fresh install issues
I was gifted a 2007 iMac that had its hard drive wiped clean & unformatted. My goal is to get it running El Capitan, seeing that it is the oldest iMac that has the capability (after I upgraded the RAM - 4gb). I have since formatted the harddrive and made an install drive out of an external SSD. When I boot from the installable SSD, it begins the process, but fails and throws black and white code over the white screen & Apple logo.
I have successfully installed a new harddrive and El Capitan on an '08 Macbook using this exact process, but have not been successful with the iMac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

That might be the problem: install disks were always for only the machine they came with and couldn't be used for any other machine.
My suggestion would be that you get a retail Snow leopard disk at the Apple store - that should work. You can then update to El Cap.
