Q: Mac Pro (late 2013) Graphic Issues

Hi everyone

I own a Mac Pro from late 2013 and occasionally run into graphic problems. I work on a dual monitor setup, mostly drawing CAD. At times my monitors freeze while background processes continue to run (music etc.). At times I still manage to control the interface, but it's very sluggish. When I open activity monitor I can see that there aren't any processes that could slow down my mac as much, so I'm quite confident, that the graphics card is at fault (also because sometimes my mac even tells me "there was a graphics card problem"). Problem is when I run the hardware check everything seems to be in order.

This is really frustrating and I'm unsure what to do about this. Does anyone else have problems with this?

Kind regards

Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

I too have the same problem and have had it for years. However, I do find that now with the latest OS update (10.11.4) the problem is handled much better. Now the GPU still hangs, but it is rebooted automatically after 1 - 2 seconds. Not really acceptable, but better......

Thanks for this insight....I will upgrade to the latest OS soon and hopefully this will help as far as the freezing and hanging is concerned. How can such an expensive machine be doing this? Are Apple aware of the unhappiness of its customers? People who buy Mac pro's are probably using them for there jobs , as I do, and I must say it's been one of the worst experiences of my professional career as a music producer . I wish I'd read these posts before buying the Mac pro rather than believing the sales blurb that Apple released. Hopefully these machines will soon be recalled and we can all start working like we're supposed to.Thanks again for your input.

I have gone through 2 MacPro's in 1 week and sent them both back, cancelled my lease and i am going PC after 32 years of Apple computers.

I am disappointed in Apples lack of of interchachangability in the graphics card which obviously do not work with Premiere CC. The AMD cards(500 and 700) do not talk with Premiere and they have known about this issue for 2 years. I am saving $1500 dollars and getting a better, faster and upgrada computer that I can pay off and make money with and not worry about the creative process. Apple please bring back the upgradable towers, please stop with form follows function when it comes to professional products. My computer ends up in the corner of the desk, I only look at it when I open the box...

Five hangs in two hours...all seem to be GPU related...I have the firepro 300' s ....seems to be the same issue that the 500's and 700's face.....WHY ARE THEY NOT RECALLING THE 300"s .....pathetic !

You may have a Sample Defect --  a failure that affects only your specific Mac. But now the genius bars in big cities are getting used to the idea that these boards may fail, and resolution of these problems is easier.

Take it in for an evaluation.

Thanks for the advice....I did have the Mac at the repair centre for 8 days...it apparently passed  all the tests...had a fresh os install....and without reinstalling any of my programs did exactly the same thing...they've now asked me to video the problem and send it back(prob another 8 days) so frustrating !! Thanks again for your input

As an update - as useless as it will be - yes, the latest OS version does sometimes restart the graphics automatically, but many times it does not. And, those times when it does not, nothing works other than a hard reboot. It used to be that all I needed to do was to unplug the monitor and plug it back in for the graphics to come back. So, I guess it is actually worse now than it was previously.

Yes, this is a black eye for Apple for those of us who have been loyal to the brand for so long (I purchased my first one in the early 90's). It doesn't help to suggest going to the genius bar when the closest one is 250 miles away........

I have done the update and there is no improvement whatsoever .....I still can unplug one of my monitors and the computer resets itself but is however slower , until I do a full restart.Console always says says something like "GPU driver appears to be hung for more than 5 continuous seconds". Do I need new graphics cards?(at 650 dollars each) Can I update the driver? Any advice much appreciated .

Hi folks, I have just bought a new Mac Pro (Late 2013) CTO configuration with a 3.5GHz 6Core Intel Xeon, 64GB RAM, 256GB SSD flash storage and dual AMD FirePro D500 graphics cards, I have had this machine for a couple of days now and so far so good, I have even tested it with ASD (Apple Service Diagnostic) and everything is OK (even the graphics cards obviously) but I am pretty worried my machine could show in the future these problems so many people are experiencing so the questions are: 1) should I be fine provided that the ASD reports the machine with no issues at all or these symptoms could appear at any moment even the tests reports as everything OK right now? 2) How do I know the manufacture date of my machine (I just want to make sure my machine is not manufactured between February 8, 2015 and April 11, 2015 due between these dates Apple just got something wrong for sure in the manufacturing process so they already know they mess things up.

there are several ways through the serial number and one thing for sure if you booted the machine and it came with El Capitan it's very recent especially if it is built to order another thing is to check the speed disk with black magic if it goes beyond the 900 megabyte read and write speed the components used in it is very recent. I bought my Mac Pro in january of this year and the first one was made recently with the most newest components but it had graphics card issues and the second machine I had was built with Mavericks on it and it had older components because the flash drive was much slower than the one I have now which has no graphics issues.http://image.jpegimage.jpeg

the one with the faster flash drive came with El Capitan install but it had graphics card issues

Does anybody know what exactly is wrong with these graphics cards? Are they seated incorrectly? Do they overheat? Is there something I could check to alleviate this never-ending hanging .

    Thanks for any help

These Macs are now getting old enough that junkyards are getting broken units, and tearing them down to harvest the good parts. New parts are also occasionally available.

Used and new graphics board for these Macs are now available on the after-market, from well-known Mac parts suppliers, with a modest warranty.

The technology for replacement is a bit complex, as thermal compound is required (the graphics chips and RAMs are pressed against the central heatsink, and thermally connected with thermal compound, and in some cases, thermal pads as well.)

The cost is high by the standards of typical replacement parts, but comparable to a MacBook Pro logic board: US$600 and up.
