Which iMac was the last that could be used as a second screen / monitor to a newer iMac?

I need to make a decision wrt to implementation at one of our positions.

Any iMac can be used as one through Virtual Network Computing. For doing so with Target Display mode, click here.

To be fair, VNC isn't quite the same. It allows you to access the 2nd computer and control it but you can't drag application windows from one Mac to another. Also in VNC the screen of the remote Mac appears on the originating Mac.
