Q: why did the last update slow my MacBook pro down so much

why did the last update slow my MacBook pro down so much? What could have been  in the last El Capitan update to slow my Mid 2010 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro down so much?   It has never run this slow before! Everything is taking longer across the board. Could I have done something wrong during the download and install?  If so is there any way to force a re-install of the last update?

I'm not sure if I can restore back past an update of that size. Is anyone else having similar problems or have any thoughts on what might be wrong? I know this is far from a state of the art Macbook Pro. But it was running just fine before the last update.

Any thoughts would really be appreciated. I can't really afford to buy something newer right now.

     Thanks

Things you can try to solve this:

    1. https://support.apple.com/kb/PH21875?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Start up in safe mode, and reboot afterwards.

    2. How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

    Reset NVRAM.

If this doesn't help, download Etrecheck, make a report and show the results here.

Having the same issue also, this is unbearable. I thought this was attributed to flash, but it is looking like safari...painful.

       Sorry to hear that.

I tried the fixes from " Esquared" Rebooting after bring in it up in "Safe Mode" and "Resetting the NVRAM  Without much success.

I'm going to try downloading "Etrecheck" and try sending in the results. Wanted to see what it was first.

I'm not so sure it is just Safari in my case. It seems to boot slower, start Apps slower, spellcheck and typing in general is slower. At times you have to wait for the letters to hit the screen before you know if you have any mistakes. (And I'm not even a touch typist) I'm also seeing tis effect in responding to or, creating an Email.

I'm really sick of seeing that spinning beach ball. And boy do I see a lot of it!

My thanks to "Esquared" for the advise. Hopefully  "Etrecheck) comes up with some answer's.

If I find any fixes on my own or from anyplace other than the communities, I'll be sure to post what  find here.

I'm really surprised we haven't heard of more users complain of the same problem. Makes me Really wonder if I had a glitch while downloading or installing. Still haven found a way to force a re-install.

         Good luck

Please bear with me.  I know very little about how computers operate.  I Have a MacBook Pro and up-graded to E Cap on Wednesday and since then it runs very very slowly and stops and starts when typing or going from one page to another in Safari.  So far I have spoken with three techs.  The first, DeWayne, ran all sorts of tests and cleaning (?) thing; the second, Demetria, worked with me on Saturday and also did a lot of things and ended up running FileVault - something about encryption?  I think she tried to re-install but ended up with running FileVault.  We set a call back time and Sr Tech Londo called and told me to wait out the FileVault and that he could not get back to me until Tuesday.  As of now, FileVault is still doing its thing and I don't know what to do or where to go.  I am afraid to try any of the suggestions I have read, and will greatly appreciate any comments or suggestions you have.

It will be interesting to see what they find. I didn't call tech support because of the holiday weekend. Might have to if I can't get this figured out by tomorrow.

i'm trying to re-download and than re-install. Right now. I wasn't having any major problems with El Capitan until the update 2 or 3 days ago.

but since than! Major slowdown pretty much on everything. I've seen more of that spinning beach ball in the last 2 or 3 day than I have in the last 10 years!

I am having the same issues you are, machine (Macbook Pro 17 2010) running slow, applications (outlook, finder, vlc) take minutes to utilize when switching windows/apps it takes many seconds, this started earlier this week after update. I restarted, opened each app individually, ran antivirus/malware removal (nothing found) ran Disk Utility repair permissions etc. The problem returned later...I fretted thinking maybe it is my new SSD...

I did a little troubleshooting when this first came up and looked though activity monitor and noticed flash maybe had a leak, I typically keep 15 or so tabs open with no issues, but I noticed that when only having remaining 4 tabs open flash was using 3 GB of memory (Out of 8). I killed the problem page (an article with no advertisements/videos??) and the machine started functioning like before. I haven't had the slow down issues for a last few hours. Hopefully this issue is resolved with some patch soon.

I hope that fixes your slow down. I never have more than 4 or 5 apps open  (that includes FaceTime, finder and keychain) still getting slow down on everything. In the process or reinstalling "El Capitan" now. we'll see what happens. Could just be their way of telling us our machines are too old and slow! I hope not! Wasn't planning to buy a new laptop just now. It's not like it's just $400 and up like a PC laptop we're looking at $1800 minimum.

I'll let everyone know if the reinstall helps.

Oh... I ment to ask, since you mentioned screen problems. Did you try the reset procedure that "Esquared" mentioned when I first opened this topic? That was Mar 26th shows up 5 or 6 posts from here.

Ok...Well Reinstalled and ran the NVRAM Reset that "Esquared" recommended. Seems like it might have helped a little. but not much. Still spending a lot of time watching the Beachball spinning any time I do...well.. pretty much anything. I'm wondering what would happen if I tried to reinstall Maverick.

After reinstalling El Capitan I don't show any updates pending so I have to assume the download of El Capitan (Now on the Apple website) must include the update that started this whole problem.

Also still notice (Just while typing this reply) that even my slow typing is outrunning the software. And i'm talking typing just a bit above 2 finger hunt and peck! Hate to see what a touch typist would have to deal with!

All of this makes me wonder why there seem to be a relatively few of us having significant problems. Otherwise we would see a lot more on the Communities about this problem. Makes me think that this might be just us and not widespread. Maybe a virus or a certain combination of apps installed or Maybe there aren't  as many Mid 2010 (or older) Mac's out there as I thought.

I guess i really am out of date. If that's the case. I sure hope I can get an older OS on here. Might buy me a bit more time.

Sorry to hear, I hope rolling back helps. I have been running el capitan on mine for months with minimal issues until this week. I haven't tried nvram reset, but I am not experiencing any of the slow down for the last several hours. I am stuck because I need a 17" and they (Apple) sadly stopped the product line. I have a newer 2014 model (13" that I use at work) but the screen size is more important for me for home use. I would roll back also to mavericks/yosemite also. I'll keep trying to troubleshoot if this comes up again, but in my case it seems like it was safari/flash. I will say that the issue started before the latest Apple update, and I updated to latest version AND update flash player. The problem returned shortly after though...either way good luck.

I'm glad your back up to normal speed. I know what you mean about the 17" monitor. It's ashame they discontinued it. I would have been interested in one if I bought a new laptop.

We're you talking Adobe? When you mention flash player?   I have heard some rumors. of others running into some problems with one or another add-on. I wnder if that could be the problem on my end? I think I have an Adobe PDF add-on that got loaded on at some point. (Might have been my wife.) Don't think I put it on.

    Hi HMBGENO:

Try reseting the SMC: Reset the SMC

Also we are still waiting for you to download EtreCheck https://etrecheck.com/ and post the results. Hopefully it will offer some clues.

I am confused by this entire situation; all I did was up-grade to El Cap at Apple's invitation!  I don't understand how it can be an issue for some but not all.  I bought my laptop to replace my 10 year old iMac desktop and never had any problems with any of the up-grades I did on that.  Does the slowdown mean that there is/was a problem that was turned on by the up-grade?  Do you really think that buying a new laptop is the answer?  That's out of my budget range.  That being said, I will be in touch with Tech Support again...

       Hi Maureen

I know how you feel, but I really don't think they're doing anything so sinister. I know it seems that way sometimes, but they usually work out the bugs. It could be any number of things. Combination of apps, a bug (Not virus) just a glitch in one app in combination with a certain computer model / processor, or another app. They usually get it figured out sooner or later.(Usually sooner) I get frustrated myself now and then. I usually wait 2 to 4 weeks before letting an update install just for that reason. gives them time to get the kinks out. I just let my guard down this time and let the update install. Give it a few days and / or talk to Tech support or give the communities a chance to figure it out. I'm a retired electronics engineer (unfortunately way out of the loop computer wise) the communities have some real talented people involved and the tech staff at Apple are top notch. They'll figure it out. I know how you feel. I still run a Mac Mini thats so old it won't run anything past Snow Leopard and it never has any problems. That being said, it also doesn't have near the capabilities of even my Mid 2010 MacBook Pro. and the Mini is running on an OS that been stable for some time now.

You really have to give Apple and the communities a lot of credit for keeping as many different processors of different speeds and capabilities all compatible. That can't be easy. Hang in there. I'm sure it will get figured out. With the holiday weekend, Apple tech support may not even know there is a problem until tomorrow.

If I hear anything or someone comes up with a fix I'll check and make sure it gets posted here ASAP

Have a nice night and try not to stress on it too much. I know its hard. We all depend on our computer so much. But believe me it will get figured out.
