Q: MacBook doesn't always enter sleep when lid closed

Recently my MacBook 15" Early 2011 has developed a sleep issue. Very often, when the lid is closed, the fans keep on running and the MacBook runs warm. The LED-indicater on the front turns on. The machine will remain in this state, so no sleep happens. Then when the lid is opened, the LED-indicator turns off, but the screen doesn't light up. Closing and re-opening the lid doesn't change a thing. The only remedy is forcing a power-off.

Things that changed recently:

  • I replaced the harddrive. I installed a Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500 GB (firmware: EMT01B6Q).
  • I enabled TRIM (sudo trimforce enable).
  • I reinstalled OS X 10.11.3 and restored a Time Machine backup.

Things I've already done:

  • Reset PRAM and SMC.
  • Verified energy saving settings.
  • No peripherals attached (power adapter only).
  • Updated to OS X 10.11.4.
  • Check the console for messages. No seemingly interesting messages were posted before closing the lid, and no messages are written until after forcing power-off. So no messages are written for when the lid is opened.

Other information:

  • 2 GHz Intel Core i7
  • FileVault Disk Encryption
  • No optical drive installed
  • 2x 4 GB memory (non OEM)
  • The MacBook is sometimes slow to wake
  • Putting the system to sleep before closing the lid has the same issue

Run Activity Monitor (found in Utilities), click on the Energy tab and see if anything you're running is preventing sleep.

There are no apps listed that prevent sleep. Also, even with all apps closed the problem perseveres.

You mentioned that you replaced the hard drive. It is possible that a key (or keys) is being pressed when the MacBook Pro is closed therefore keeping it awake.

The issue I'm having is that sometimes when the lid is closed the OS goes to sleep mode, while the hardware keeps running. The fans keep spinning and the machine runs (very) hot. If this occurred, opening the MacBook makes no difference, the OS doesn't wake anymore. I have to force shutdown in order to be able to use the machine.

So I'm thinking it's safe to say that any third party isn't the culprit here. I've already reinstalled OS X and the problem keeps surfacing.

The issue has worsened. When I closed the MacBook, I verified that the system went to sleep by listening to the fans. The system was completely silent. Then I plugged in the charger. The next morning I found the MacBook with fans running and hot to touch. Opening the MacBook resulted in the same as before, only the activity led is turned off as if the machine is waking. However the screen is not activated (no display + no backlight), the keyboard is not illuminated and the machine is overall unresponsive. I have to force-off the machine in order to use it again.
