Q: Is anyone else finding mail slow after the latest El Capitan upgrade?

I'm finding mail slower (more noticeably than anything else) after the latest El Capitan upgrade 10.11.4 - but I can't see any other chatter about it on the web. Is anyone else finding this?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Please launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take an action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

Not sure if I'm getting this right, but one of the actions that's noticeable is the 2 finger scroll, or selecting messages to move into folders. (nb, I have mailhub installed too, as well as mail tags and mail act-on, but none of these affected speed a few days ago).

Anyway, cleared the console and tried to scroll/move and these lines kept coming up:

    Please back up all data.

Open the Internet Accounts pane in System Preferences and make a note of the settings for the Exchange account. There may be separate entries for mail and other services, such as contacts. Then delete the entries. Confirm that you want to delete the data. It will still be on the server.

Test. Then recreate the account with the same settings. Test again.

    Thanks Linc

Your post got me thinking. So I deleted the Exchange and then reimported. Did that for all the accounts actually. No single account seemed to make the difference.

On the whole things were much better, but started to get slowness again. Deleted the gmail account. Wasn't sure if I was imagining the speed increase. But even today, drafting an email, huge lags appear.

Could it just be I'm getting a full computer (less than 15% free space) and have lots of emails? I try to file them in folders in the client, but on my computer, not trying to leave them on their respective servers. Any further thoughts. I appreciate your helpfulness, but especially with the creation of a new mail, I know I'm not imagining it, and I know it's almost pretty much mail-specific.

    Hi Beyond

Always best to have 25% free space on any drive.

If you have vast amounts of emails stored on your boot drive, I suggest you archive as many old emails as possible to external drives.

emails can contain large file attachments, pictures, etc… so you may be able to clear off significant amounts of data.

Also, Mail will get slow to open with vast stored emails and numerous folders/smart folders etc…

IMHO now is a good time for a Spring Cleaning.

Also make sure you don't have large numbers of files and pictures, music on your desktop as this can also slow down your computer. Having lots of open apps can also cause slowdowns. You can use Activity Monitor (Utilities Folder) to check on RAM usage and Page Swaps. If you are out of ram, large page swaps, this means the computer needs to write files to the hard drive and then reload as needed, sllllllooooooowww!

Finally, if you haven't completely shutdown and then rebooted your computer lately, try that. This will clear out lots of crud in temp files.

    Hope this helps, Greg

The amount of free space you have has nothing to do with it.

Please test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.

Back up all data before making any changes.

    Step 1

If you use iCloud Drive, please open the iCloud pane in System Preferences. There is a checkbox marked iCloud Drive, and next to that, a button marked Options. Click that buttion, and in the sheet that drops down, uncheck the box marked Mail if it's checked.

This Mail checkbox is not to be confused with the one, also marked Mail, that appears when you first open the  iCloud preference pane. They have different effects.

    Step 2

If Mail crashes or freezes immediately on launch, try the steps suggested on this page. Sometimes a corrupt message on a mail server can be deleted by logging in to the server through its web page.

    Step 3

If Mail still won't launch, or if you can't take this step for any other reason, skip to Step 4.

There are three types of mail account: IMAP, Exchange, and POP. You can determine the type of each account by opening the Mail preferences window, selecting the Accounts tab, and then selecting Account Information.

Export all POP mailboxes to the Desktop folder.

If you have IMAP or Exchange accounts, and you don't store sent, deleted, and junk messages on the server, export those mailboxes the same way. You can determine whether the messages are on the server by selecting Mailbox Behaviors in the Accounts tab.

Also export all mailboxes in the On My Mac category.

You don't have to export the other mailboxes, because the messages are stored on the servers.

    Quit Mail.

    Step 4

In System Preferences, open Internet Accounts (OS X 10.9 or later) or Mail, Contacts & Calendars (OS X 10.7 or 10.8). Make notes of the settings for each mail account (all types), then delete the accounts.

    Step 5

Quit Mail if it's running. In the Finder, hold down the option key and select

              Go ▹ Library

from the menu bar. Move the following items (some may not exist) from the folder that opens to the Desktop:

              Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr

              Containers/com.apple.corerecents.recentsd

              Containers/com.apple.mail

              Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent

              Containers/com.apple.share.Mail.compose

              Mail

Note: you are not moving the Mail application. You’re moving a folder named “Mail.”

    Step 6

Launch Mail. It will behave as if you were setting it up for the first time. Go through the setup process with one account, using the information from Step 4. Test. If Mail works now, recreate the rest of the accounts (if you have more than one) and other settings.

Any custom stationery that you created may be lost. Ask for instructions if you want to preserve that data.

If there’s no improvement, quit Mail and put back the items you moved to the Desktop, replacing any newer ones that may have been created in their place. Stop here and post your results.

    Step 7

If you took Step 3, import the mailboxes you exported (see the support article linked to Step 3 for instructions.) Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.

The mailboxes that you didn't export should synchronize automatically with the server. Again, if the mailboxes are very large, downloading them may take quite some time, and network performance will be slower than usual during that time.

If you skipped Step 3, look inside the Mail folder on the Desktop for a subfolder

             V3/Mailboxes (for OS X 10.11 or later)

    or

V2/Mailboxes (for any older version of OS X)

    Import the mailboxes it contains.

Test. If Mail is still working, delete the items you moved to the Desktop in Step 5.

Re-enable the Mail option in the settings for iCloud Drive, if you disabled it, and test again. If you weren't already using iCloud Drive with Mail, there is no need to enable it now, unless you want to.

You're amazing and really patient. Thanks.

I think step 1 may have worked - certainly in drafting an email it was heaps quicker. And I have absolutely NO idea why.

I'll wait a little longer before I sign off on the "this worked for me" button, but it sure looks promising.

I'm having problems with Mail too, since upgrading to 10.11.4.  Anything requiring a trackpad click is slow.  Click on the text and it takes 2 seconds for the cursor to appear.  Highlighting text the same.  Clicking send, the same.  But if I use a mouse, not the trackpad, it works fine!  And clicks and highlighting are fine in the Finder and all other apps.

When I run Activity Monitor, it shows Mail taking 136% of the CPU, though this falls slowly away when I start to work outside Mail on other tasks.  I've uninstalled Mail add-ons such as Mailhub and trackpad utilities such as BetterTouchTool but it makes no difference.

Rebooting or quitting Mail helps for a while but the sluggishness soon returns, (after about 10-15 minutes of use).

Really weird.  Does anyone have any ideas?
