Q: OS 10.11.4 broke all of my applications...

I just updated my Macbook Pro and my Mac Pro to OS 10.11.4.  On my laptop, everything seems to be fine.  On my Mac Pro, none of my applications

will open.  I get an error that says "You can't open the application "Disk Utility" because it may be damaged or incomplete."  I get the same message on all the applications I try to open.  I am beyond p i s s e d.  There is absolutely NO excuse for this kind of thing to be happening in this day and age.  If anyone know WHY this d a m n update did this and what I can do to correct it, your input is greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4), 24 GB, Radeon 4870, Blu-ray

If I remember correctly this is the first time since 1986 that an OS update gave me problems. So, once every 30 odd years is not bad statistics. Still, I found no resolution to the problem. I even erased my disk, restored from a bootable backup, but now the updater downloads, installs, but at the end of the process I am left with 10.11.3 - This is amazing.

This is why I was looking for the full installer so that I can install on a clean empty disk and then use the merge with an "older" mac - an option that I remember that was once available.

    Thanks anyhow,

    Shuka

So install 1011.3 and use the 10.11.4 combo updater.

So System 8.0 (1997) was working for you? Then you were very lucky!

I found the solution i guess.

I had EXACTLY the same issue. After re-installing the OS X and wasting hours, I figured out that the problem is not the system. Re-installing would be waste of time as it doesn't fix the issue. Downgrading could take time, and if you don't have backup you wouldn't be able to go back like you did.

I figured out that only the account(user) has that problem, I signed in as the guest and all the apps were working. So somehow, your account got broken -don't know why-

    Here is the solution;

1- Create a new account with a name you like (must be admin).

2- Then log into that account and delete your original account. DO NOT erase home folder when you do this. Select the option that keeps the home folder.

3- Access the original user folder -via finder- and change its name to something else.

4- Create another new account with your original username (the one you used use)

5- Access the new user folder and delete it. THEN access the user folder that you changed with something else, and rename it with the ORIGINAL NAME again.

    6- restart

7- access the original folder and right click > Get info > bottom of the window > click gear icon and apply this account to all enclosed items.

    8- restart again.

I hope it doesn't sound complicated, because it is so simple.

I took a different approach. I had a clone of the disk. I wiped the disk and then installed a new copy of El Capitan, which now downloads as 10.11.4. I then used migration assistant to copy apps and files over. Everything is fine now and the machine seems to be running slightly faster.

    Dear Russell:

This is exactly what I was trying to do but I am unable to download a El Capitan 10.11.4 installer (or any other). Can you please send the address that you downloaded it from?

    Thanks

    Once more etc:

It can ONLY be downloaded from the App Store, so go there.
