Q: FireWire problems

Not having a good time with my computers at the moment but this particualr problem concerns Firewire. i have used this system very competently in the past, it isn't working for me now so I must be missing something.

Am wanting to transfer files from 10.7 mac mini to Yosemite iMac, have tried several times alternating target and host computer set ups ( necessary because it didn't work when i thought it should) but each time the best result is seeing each machines own HD on it's own desktop and not on the other machine.

No use me keeping on trying.

My understanding was the Target computer is the one from which i want transfer files and the other is the Host ? But it didn't work that way or in reverse.

Is there a compatibility issue please?

I have enjoyed the simplicity of FireWire in the past.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

With the Mini booted in Target Disk Mode and connected to the iMac, what does Disk Utility show about Macintosh HD?

    Have you tried repairing it?

    Does the Mini work OK?

Good morning.... last question first yes mini working well I'm using it for all this correspondence. I have a (smaller) iMac 10.6 which is my main computer but display has stopped working at least I hope it's just a display problem and am using the mini in meantime. This is what started all of this, I had only partially backed up items from 10.6 before it collapsed . I had moved some over to this mini and then decided to connect up mini and big iMac by wire which brings us to present time. Are you able to see my reply to dwb? I sent him a shot of disk utility, moving on from there I will add to that by showing you some shots.. one will show the HD  icon that appears on iMac screen when hooked up. Another will show what i see when i open that icon which is the contents of the iMac itself..  a Yosemite screen rather than Lion.  The Home Folder you see named susanc is my folder on iMac, it has fullsurname on mini and the files are different from mini as is the appearance.   Now to deepen mystery further when i opened Macintosh HD in disk utilities ( on iMac) and get info it can be seen to be 10.7.5   Eureka.  But back to point being when i open it from the desktop screen i see the iMac contents.  I am starting to feel one of you might come up with something, there has to be something I'm missing.  I believed when wire is hooked up i would see HD from mini and instantly know what i was looking at and be able to move files across to iMac.

Have now taken more pictures for you and IIlaass, as i've said to her/him I'm hopeful one of you might come up with something, I think it's there somewhere but too deep for me to see.  I expected just to see the mini HD pop up on iMac and Bob's your uncle but obviously he isn't... which given all the modern gender bending probably shouldn't be a surprise.  Pictures are one of HD icon on iMac desktop when hooked up to mini.  Another shows what can be seen when that icon is opened which is from my 10.10 iMac files and has home folder name of susanc which is not folder name on mini but coup d'gras is while hooked up and Macintosh HD appears in disk utility and I open it for info it shows 10.7.5.  Don't know what to say. Don't think i want to add lol though.

I am confused. From the info you provided Macintosh HD in the HD in the Mac booted in Target disk Mode.

From the info Macintosh HD can be accessed via Finder. Thus just copy the files you want.

Sue anticipated my next question/request and like you, I am confused again. What I see of her desktop picture she should be able to copy items from the Macintosh HD (which should be the mini) to untitled (which should be the iMac). If that’s not the case I now have no hair. Luckily my alias has a hat so no changes are required.

I understand why you are saying this.  i only wrote to forum because i was having so much trouble. When i open the HD icon that appears on iMac screen i only see the files from within so no point dragging them out. It's going full circle and maybe i will find a way in time. The picture i showed was what opens up from icon and it isn't mini. I'll attach a shot of mini showing different home folder name and it's files from within there that i want to move. Further pics would show different files from iMac. I always found FW to be straightforward and never needed help except just reading about it.  I want to thank you both very much for helping and basically for being there. From here on in we would just get mired down. I will keep having a think about it ad trying different things. I have also renamed the mini HD so recognition is easier.

How are you determining that they are the files on the iMac?

From the info provided Macintosh HD is connected vai FW and thus that is the disk in the Mini.

Hi.. you are able to see replies i send to each other but i would like to extend personal thanks to you lllaass. I would re confirm that the mini which is the one i want to remove files from has been the one started in Target mode all this time except before i went on forum, by then i had tried it the other way when i couldn't get it to work in the way i felt it should. But i have been asked a couple of times if i had it the right way around and i think i did ? I wanted the mini HD to show on iMac so mini is Target ? and the other is Host.  I doubted myself at the beginning but stuck with it this way around when it seemed to be what the correct thing. All I can say is may God etc help me if it wasn't the correct way. And I would feel sorry for you two.

Here’s the bottom line: there are two disks showing on your desktop. Are they indeed one from the mini and one from the iMac? (One thing I should have mentioned earlier is that I often changed the drive icon or drive name so I could tell the two apart  … Working in a lab setting and being one of the uber techs I was often interrupted and I often used little cues like that to keep me centered.)

The thing about FWTD mode is that the mounted FW disk is just like any other external drive - you can copy to and from it. Calling one the source and the other target is just a way of keeping track of the direction you want to move files. In this case it isn’t designating a one way track.

As far as this being a confusing thread - I know Illaass will agree that this one doesn’t come close to setting any records and you’ve stayed calm and collected thru it all (at least so far as what we’ve seen )
