Q: Stuck on utilities screen - please help

Hi everyone,

My mid-2012 Macbook Pro was working fine this afternoon, but when I opened the lid tonight it was on a screen asking for my language, then it opened something called 'OS X Utilities'. I've had a look online and I've followed instructions to verify my disk on Disk Utility - it said 'Invalid record count. The volume could not be verified completely'. When I tried repairing it I got a message saying 'Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files'.

I'm a bit lost now on what to do next? I haven't backed my MB up in about a year and I don't recall ever using Time Machine. I want to try to save my bookmarks and documents/pictures if at all possible - how would I go about this?

Any advice would be really appreciated

Thanks

MacBook Pro

Boot into the recovery partition (command - R on a restart. Try using Disk Utility/Restore to copy the backup to a new location. Please note that this will reformat the destination partition.

If successful, boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

For the future: invest in Carbon Copy Cloner and an external hard drive or two. Clone your system to an external drive. You could also consider Disk Warrior, which sometimes fixes problems that Disk Utility cannot. If your hard drive is dying, probably none of this will help. You have to get in the habit of backing up your main system drive regularly.
