Q: Faces not displaying photo icon

When in Faces, I select a Face, but the next screen only shows some of the photo in icon mode. However if I select one of the blank icons, the photo displays.

Anyone else had this problem?

imac, Mac OS X (10.6.5)

How many faces thumbnails are missing?

Photos  has no way to force the recreation of the Faces thumbnails. You could try to repair the Photos Library, but it is not certain, if that will fix the Faces database. and if you are using iCloud Photo Library, Photo will upload all photos again to iCloud after repairing the library.

If only a few photos have missing faces thumbnails, it might be quicker to export the photo with the missing faces thumbnail, then delete it from the Photos Library, empty the Recently  Deleted album, then reimport the photo.  Photos will scan it again for faces and create a new faces thumbnail on import.

If many thumbnails are blank, you could try to restore your Photos Library from the last backup you made before the problem first occurred.

There are too many thumbnails missing, well over half. Too many to delete and re-import.  This only happened recently. I'm not sure if this is contributing to the face that all photos do not sync. In fact, when you attempt to sync, the count that is shown next to the Photos selection is wrong. It shows 1495 when there are over 9300 photos.

    Thanks

Are you syncing with iCloud Photo Library?  If the syncing has not yet finished and you are still seeing a progress bar in the photos Preferences > iCloud, I would wait until the upload has finished. It can take more than a week for a large library, even with a good internet connection.

Which version of Photos and MacOS X are you using?

No, I am not syncing with iCloud.

    Photos Version 1.5 (370.42.0)

    OS X El Capitan Version 1.5 (370.42.0)

    Thanks

No, I am not syncing with iCloud.

Then what are you syncing with?

If you are syncing with iTunes, you may have a corrupted iTunes Photo cache.  Quit Photos and iTunes, and remove the cache as described here:   iTunes: Understanding the iPod Photo Cache folder

And if that does not help, repair the Photos Library as described here:   Repair your library - Photos Help

    Hi Leonie,

I tried the rotating back and forth, and while it worked as far as the thumbnails go, all the face recognition position were all displaced and not lined up next to the face. So I decided to try something else.

Took a backup of the library first then selected Show Package Contents after  right-clicking on the library. I then deleted everything under the Thumbnails folder. All the thumbnails were then regenerated successfully.

Much simpler and less time consuming than the rotation method.

Did this result in the library being repaired? I cannot test it on my library, because my library is an iCloud library and I would have to upload 40000 photos again to iCloud, if Photos starts to repair the library.

I didn't have to repair the library but because every photo was updated, I guess they would all upload to the cloud.
