Q: Two factor authentication and mail

When I activated two-factor authentication it prevented my mac mail program (outlook for mac) from retrieving my mail from my account.  Does anyone know how to configure mail programs so that mail from @me.com can be accessed when 2-factor authentication is enabled?

If you are using two-factor or two-step verification on your Apple ID, your Apple ID password no longer works with third-party mail applications. You have to generate an app-specific application -> Using app-specific passwords - Apple Support.

Thank you for the helpful reply.  I attempted to follow the helpful link you provided on using app-specific passwords.  I accessed the security section - and clicked edit - my only options in the security tab were "change password";  "change security questions"; "rescue email"; and "two-step verification".  There was no option to generate an password for an app-specific application.  Is this option only available if two-step verification is activated (I turned it off after having trouble with my applications)?
