Q: iOS 9.3 - Safari/Mail freezes after clicking links on iPhone 6S

Hi,

Never had any problems with my iPhone 6S. Just upgraded to iOS 9.3 without any issues. After the upgrade, I can't click links when searching something on Google in Safari or clicking a link in the Mail, the apps just freeze.

I tried clearing Safari history data/cache, closing all apps and restarting the phone (both regular and holding both home/power key), disabling all sorts of settings form Safari settings, but no luck.. Anyone with an idea how to sort it out?

I did a factory reset with my 6S,128GB, IOS9.3 and configured it as a new phone, not from a iCloud backup. The phone worked fine for maybe an hour but then Safari or Mail app started to freeze like before depending situation.

This is the far most important bug I've seen before. My phone is almost useless and I need it for my work. The solution: buy an Android phone tomorrow...???

    Hi Micke-49,

Are you sure you're using the correct link? I understand you'd have to type it since clicking my link won't work on your device... so a typo is easily made.

    http://google.com/webhp?nord=1

so with http:// in front would take you to the non-secure google-search-page.

Please try again and tell me if this still ain't working for you. I've had multiple results/reactions that it works for others.

BTW I wasn't logged into Google with an account. Perhaps that makes a difference?

I can confirm that the solution described above works with JavaScript turned on.

I must have made an error trying it out earlier today.

So the good news is that Safari can handle links produced by Google searches.

Exact same thing here on my 6S. Switching off Javascript fixes links within Safari, but not from Mail or VIber. It seems to me that this bug didn't appear right after upgrading to iOS 9.3, but rather after synchronizing with iTunes while running 9.3. I am not fully certain though.

try temporary change your searching engine through settings -> safari -> searching engine, for the moment solving the issue!

Issue started late last night for me (7 days after 9.3 upgrade) on iP6s.

downgraded to 9.2.1 - worked all day.

Synchronized and got used to the 9.2.1 and bang - issue returned a few hours later.

I suspect an app or apps are causing this via some bug in the universal URL mechanism. iOS is checking with the apps who fits and the bug hits.

BAD design or really awful bug. Submitted bug via bug reporter, along with stack dumps, but no response from Apple.

BTW, two other major bugs in 9.2.1 not resolved in 9.3 although submitted as soon as the previous OS was released.

Valerioraso, changing search engines didn't work for me. Using the Google app on my iPad works for the safari problem but not for the email links.

still there is no response from apple. will they fix it asap or we need to wait for next update?

this is an unbelievable error. lot of people can not use their devices.

shutting off java script option or change default search engine to bing did not resolve my problem.

I was using Safari and my bookmarks and favourites work, but not links in Google.  I was on Amazon, and most of it worked, but I tried to look at my apps and devices, and the Amazon page says I need Java activated, but in fact, I just checked and it is enabled on my iPad mini 3.  Strange flaw.

Experiencing the issue since the morning today (6s 64GB, iOS 9.3).

The 9.3 update was installed many days ago with no issues.

The issue affects external links (links to resources outside a website) in a number of applications (e.g., Safari, Mail, Whatsapp etc.), so this is not just a Safari problem.

The discussed solution to disable Javascript is not a solution at all as the only thing it does is preventing Safari from freezing, but links don't work.

Changing the default search engine to Bing seems to make Safari a bit more usable. Chrome only processes links via "Open in new tab" option.

Waiting for an emergency iOS update from Apple

I too have this issue and would strongly agree with previous posts that it is TIME / DATE RELATED rather than specific hardware or software version. It does worryingly also look more like a hack but fingers crossed it is a bug and Apple can patch it soon. Bit dramatic all you people wanting to ditch your Apple devices at the first sign of trouble. Go buy an android device tomorow then you'll really know what a poor user experience is!!
