Q: Kernel Panics....maybe?

Lay person with what I've found are called kernel panics. I have a Macbook Air running Yosemite 10.10.5. For the last week or so, maybe 3 or 4 times in total, my computer has shut down with a brief message and coding. Troubleshooting seems to range from moderate to in store support. What can I do myself to try on a very basic level, if anything? Should I update to El Capitan? Reviews really seem to vary. Thank you.

The panic report should have "panic" in the file name.

If you do have kernel panics, post 2 or 3 of them as replies to this thread.

Also as yet another thread, I suggest you reply the output from EtreCheck

Thank you! Here is my etrecheck report. I knew it was the crap listed. Now, when I attempt to remove it, it says there is no "time machine", and it won't remove it. How do I proceed?

    Hello WittyWhits,

Normally adware will not cause kernel panics. However, you have a particularly large amount of adware installed. You can click on any of the "Details" links next to your kernel panics to get the actual kernel panic report. If you have already quit EtreCheck, you can access the kernel panic reports from the Console app.

EtreCheck will not remove adware unless you have a Time Machine backup. That is a safety feature. You could delete these files manually or use MalwareBytes for Mac, but I strongly suggest making a backup first. All Mac users need a Time Machine backup. If you, or some anti-malware tool, is going to digging around in hidden directories and deleting files, then you really, really need a backup.

    etresoft,

I backed up my mac on an external HD.

I then ran etrecheck and had it remove the adware. Hopefully this does it? Thanks for the help.

Just had another restart. This time it actually opened with the kernel panic, which it hadn't done before. Here's the latest report:

    Hello again WhittyWhits,

Did you make any changes at around the time the panics started? I am noticing more and more kernel panics without any interference from 3rd party software. 10.11.4 was released on the date of your first kernel panic, but you are still running 10.10.5. You could try upgrading to 10.11.4, but I doubt it will help resolve the panics. Make sure to do another backup without the adware and then take your machine to an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Centre for diagnostics.

I have noticed that as well.  The ones I'm thinking of all seem to be a "Kernel Trap" and the backtrace is in the

driver.  I was starting to wonder if this was a driver bug

I cannot think of any changes I would consider significant, especially because I don't do anything extraordinary. I simply surf and work. I will seek further help. Thanks again.

Was having similar crashes in Yosemite.  See my other recent posts.  Turned out to be caused by Flash Plugin in Safari.  Crashes daily w/plugin installed - rock steady for last 10 days without Flash installed.  My reports were very similar to yours...

I didn't upgrade to El Capitan - but from reading a few other posts, it looks like this might also work to stop the crashes...
