Q: Updated to 10.10.3 and now iPhoto won't open

I upgraded the OS 10.10.3 and now iPhoto won't open. It says "the version of iPhoto installed on this Mac is not compatible with OS X Yosemite.  Download the latest version for free from the Mac App Store."  However, when I go to the Mac App Store, there is no iPhoto.

I don't know what version of iPhoto I was running. I believe it was the most recent (9.6)

I also noticed that the iPhoto icon has a circle with a line through it Screen Shot 2015-04-09 at 10.08.45 AM.png

The support article says I can use iPhoto concurrently with the new photos

Thanks.  You're quick!!! You beat me to that realization.  If I go immediately to El Capitan will I be able to get iPhoto 9.6.1?

Yes. You may need the following bit of jiggery-pokery:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

Install the App from the App Store.

    ****

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

I am still looking for iPhoto 9.6.1. Apple can not help me and says I need to use Photos. But I want to use iPhoto. Can you help me to get a copy of the updater to 9.6.1. That would be great.

as posted hundreds of times in this thread and in this forum  -  Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store

But effective the  end of this month support for iPhoto print products is finished and sooner or later a OS upgrade will totally break iPhoto - your best plan is to learn Photos now - most people prefer it after bothering to learn it and in an case you really do not have the choice long term unless you stop all updates from now on

At the moment I have version 9.1.

I have bought the iLife DVD way back (think it was '09). and used that version for a long time. I got a copy of iLife '11 recently (after the upgrade to OSX El Capitan (10.11.3). So then I had iPhoto 9, which I was able to upgrade to 9.1. But it still does not open. In the App store there is no version I purchased and the update I see is not linked to my Apple ID. So I can not download it.

I am sure I will use Photos in the future but for the moment I would like to work some time in iPhoto if possible, therefore I would like to have the 9.6.1 update.

I tried everything mentioned above but without succes. There must be a copy of the update somewhere around.

So hope someone can help, or tell me politely it is impossible.

    Thanks for your reactions.

You must use the App Store. If iPhoto showsunder purchases then select it. If you are running El Capitan and you select iPhoto you'll get a screen stating to download an older version. you select and get iPhoto 9.6.1  but if you have other drives either internal or external with some version of iPhoto installed then you must use disk Utility to unmount those drives to get the purchase to show install. You may need to relaunch the App Store.

    Can you assist me?

I upgraded and have the same problem as this.

Tired togged upgrade for iPhoto from app store to run it but not available in OZ.

Tried migrating ipoto to photos (not running iCloud) and it froze at 49% (left overnight and still 49%). Computer froze and wouldn't quit photos so turned it off.

Now have it back on but not sure what to do.

My photos are some where in my mac book as when I try to attach them to word or email they are still accessible, but I ca't open them in their folders to view.

What version of iPHoto do you have?

If you have any version of iPhoto '11  (version 9.x.x) see Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store

But it is time to learn and use Photos - iPhoto is not being updated and in 4 days will no longer be able to order print products - and Most people like Photos better once they learn it - it is generally much more capable, is faster and more reliable
