Q: iOS 9.3 Safari link freezes, crashes Safari

Every time I click on a link in Safari (be it google or on another page), the link goes gray and never opens. If I try pressing several times, the device is completely unresponsive. After about a minute, the Safari crashes.

Here is what I did after speaking chatting with Apple. They said they are working on a fix and no more new tickets about this issue are being written up.  The engineers, I am told have enough information and will have a resolution soon.

What I did: (Original update to iOS 9.3 was done over the air without iTunes)

    1. Made a current , right now back up with iCloud.  I was going to do a complete phone erase and restore.

    2.  Plugged into my PC and went to my iPhone details.  Restore iPhone.

    3.  When the software download completed, iPhone will delete all information and ask if you want to setup from a previous iCloud or iTunes backup, or restore as a new iPhone.  I chose to 'restore as a new iPhone'  By doing this, it would allow me to test Safari, Mail and iMessage functionality.  I wanted to see if the links worked as they should without any of my apps or old settings.  A new phone out of the box.

    4.  Checked out all software and it checked out OK.   Everything worked as it should have!

    5.  Now I did a erase phone and settings from the iPhone, without plugging into iTunes.  I went through the entire process and when asked again about where to restore from, I chose to 'restore from iCloud backup'.

    6.  Checked functionalito of said problem Apps, and much to my amazement, everything worked as usual.

Now I will monitor this and see if it holds.  I honestly don't remember having this issue on Tuesday after the announcement having this issue.  I think it started a couple days later and really not all at once.  I  use Mail links every day and News as well.  Seemed fine after install.   I don't know.  I do know now the issue has been fixed on my iPhone 6s Plus.  Now to fix my girlfriends 6s Plus the same way.   Both of our phones were affected, but oddly enough, the iPad pro was not affected at all with the 9.3 update.

Hope this works for others.  It is frustrating to have the 'most advanced software on the planet' screw up on us like this.  Only for some, not all.  Bizarre.

    Ray

Just come off phone to Apple and was informed that the problem with the update 9.3 with Safari will be fixed in the next few days. In the meanwhile the only alternative is GO TO YOUR SETTINGS.  GO TO SAFARI. GO DOWN PAGE TO ADVANCED. CLICK OFF JAVASCRIPT. Click back on Safari search...and then use the website search without Javascript on..yeah rubbish ! but told that in a few days javascript will automatically turn itself on witha new update to correct the problem.

I tried to restore the iPhone 6 as factory and soon after for a day of backup 19/03/2016. Soon after the restoration, the links in Safari worked, however, as the applications were being restored, the safari again gave trouble. Therefore this is not a solution.

Links on Whatsapp application also freeze the device. (Even disabling Java in Safari)

I think all the links that refer to Safari do freeze the iPhone.

    Honestly Apple ...

And the worst. Still leave available to update the iOs to 9.3  knowing this problem!    ×((

Same problem here with iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6. Worked fine for some time and then all of a sudden all links are broken. iMessages, Mail, Safari. Terrible quality control on Apples side.. I hope this gets fixed soon and without going through the hazzle of restoring the device.

Safari freezes for me when clicking a link too. If I try peek and pop safari crashes and I have to reset it.

    I'm using iPhone 6S+ on ios9.3

How do we report this to Apple and get them to fix it?

There is an Easter Sunday iPhone 6S 128G Fix All Links in Safari and via Apple Apps Working iOS 9.3

    1) Bing Fix did not work

    2) JavaScript disable / re-enable did not work

    3) Turn on / off Content Blocking apps did not work

    4) Multiple Hard Reset(s) no change

    5) Never had Booking.com app can't remove

What worked is A Complete Factory Reset using with NO BACKUP. Meaning using an my iPhone 6S 128g is not a hardware issue. It is not an Apple update issue per se, it is some 3rd party apps that change or affect initialization of Safari via hyperlinks. It is a 3rd party App issue that was not caught in QA. Phone is restored with Keychain, but no 3rd party apps added. Did not restore, simply factory reset, and running iOS 9.3 all is working great...

I still believe it may be something to do with content blocking/apps, but really not sure. I just can't believe you can have 3rd party apps update how pop-ups and html code displays without causing a glitch after a significant upgrade...

Will begin slow process of updating app by critical app to see what did it.  It is a true hassle to wipe every app off the phone...

    GOOD LUCK

    Dear All,

The following solved my safari links' issue on iPhone 6s & iPad Pro both running the latest ios 9.3:

    Answer is copied from osxdaily:

"Disable Javascript in Safari for iOS as described here allows links to work in Safari again, but by sacrificing javascript functionality on the webbrowser, this is very much a workaround but it is the most reliable solution to get links to work in Safari (but not Mail)".

    POSSIBLE SOLUTION FOUND!

After trying everything that was mentioned on all threads about the issue I have decided to try a stept by step approach and found this solution that so far works for me. Not sure if all steps MUST be done but this is what worked in my case:

    1. Settings - General - Reset - Erase all content and settings (not a big issue for me because it's a brand new ipad air 2 bought 2 days ago

    2. Start the device, set up as a new device (no restore from icloud or itunes), no location services, no touch ID, selected a 4 digit passcode and chose not to enter any apple ID for the moment (selected "set up later in settings). Also I have selected the option to send diagnostic data to Apple and the devs.

    3. So far, so good. Safari works like a charm for the moment and I will now try to add the icloud account and apple ID to see if it hold up.

I will get back to you after I try this.

edit 1: no problems after adding the icloud account.

edit 2:problem is BACK after turning on location services and installing some apps. RETRYING NOW to identify the exact issue.

edit 3: location services are NOT the problem
