Q: iOS 9.3 - Safari/Mail freezes after clicking links on iPhone 6S

Hi,

Never had any problems with my iPhone 6S. Just upgraded to iOS 9.3 without any issues. After the upgrade, I can't click links when searching something on Google in Safari or clicking a link in the Mail, the apps just freeze.

I tried clearing Safari history data/cache, closing all apps and restarting the phone (both regular and holding both home/power key), disabling all sorts of settings form Safari settings, but no luck.. Anyone with an idea how to sort it out?

As usual in recent history... another hunk of dung from Apple. I have been battling 9.X.X and it not working with my new truck since I updated to it and apple keeps blaming it on Chevrolet, which oddly enough worked perfect until the day I updated to the 9.x.x.

Long story short, I heard 9.3 was suppose to fix this "Chevrolet" issue so against my better judgement I upgraded as soon as it was available.... now My phone is even closer to a brick than it was before.

I have been with apple since the original IPhone and cannot believe what I'm about to do..... Deep breath....... headed to AT&T to look at The Android Devices and more than likely Goodbye 6 Plus! Heck, I have already replaced my iPad with this Surface Pro... Had I not, I probably wouldn't have been able to get on here and complain to all of you, LOL.

Good luck guys, I cant keep doing this.

I spent yesterday trying everything to rectify this issue. It started the day before prior to downloading the new 9.3 update however the update hasn't helped!!!! I cannot follow links in any application other than Facebook....not happy. You are right disabling Javascript helps with Safari as a short term fix however Google Chrome, Messages & Mail links still freeze each application when you click on them. Apple a fix for this problem should be your #1 priority!.

Same as most have reported. Ran the cursed 9.3 update Thursday night, just noticed Safari links weren't working last night. All day today (Sunday, my usual day to sit around browsing the web), I tap links, and nothing happens. Hold a link, Safari freezes, or freezes then crashes.

Uninstalled Booking.com (which I heard was a random thing to try) — no luck. Disabled pop up blocker and JavaScript; only succeeded in making links accessible from a Google search in Safari; links in the actual webpages accessed don't work.

Downloaded Chrome: same thing happens, but at least in Chrome when I hold down a link, it gives the option of opening in a new tab. Sorting through the myriad tabs this creates is rather painful and kludgy, though. Once on your desired webpage, some links work, some don't.

I just checked, and my favorite 3rd-string iPhone browser, Puffin, has come to the rescue. Works like a charm. An imperfect solution, but at least I can use the web like a normal human being whilst Apple gets their stuff into gear.

I have an iPhone 6 recently (regrettably) upgraded to iOS 9.3. While I'm glad to see I'm not alone, this is quite a shockingly major bug to have let slip. Apple, shame on you. ::sad face::

Suede, your missing the fix. It's not enough to just uninstall booking.com. You have to uninstall and THEN wipe iPhone and set it up as new. Your problem will be fixed. It's a hassle to reinstall apps, but eve thing else is stored in iCloud.

I am having the same problem, I had to switch my search engine to "Bing" in order to be able to use Safari.  Hyperlinks from my "yahoo" mail app don't work either now, I just get a blank white screen!!  This is beyond annoying and is going to make it difficult to get work done.  I have also notice some weirdness when using Instagram as well, when you click on links I get the white screen as well or the app crash's.  I have rebooted 3 times already!!!

FYI...And this is to Apple when they try to Deny that this is their fault. My wife and I have the same phone, 6 Plus, 256, bought the same day. I downloaded the update, immediately noticed the issue and told her not to install the new update. She has absolutely 0 issues with links. 0... let me repeat this Apple. She DID NOT update here phone to 9.3 and is having 0 issues.

    Here's what I got

    1. Clicking on any link in any apple stock app, does nothing, a long press freezes the app and you have to force close it. For some people disabling javascript makes the browser usable. It doesn't fix link in other apps.

    2. Erasing everything and setting the phone up as a new iPhone fixes stuff (some people are reporting that installing and using some apps cause this behaviour even on not affected phones)

    3. Besides starting from scratch nothing helps.

    4. Apple support advised me to wait for an update in the coming days.

This is a clusterfuck ... how this passed trough Apple's QA after 6 betas (for a minor version that's a lot) I have no idea.

So there's nothing we can do besides start from scratch or wait. GGGGreeeeat!

iPhone 6 (not S, nor Plus) -- Disabling JavaScript had no effect. No custom keyboards or ad blockers. Interestingly it affects Mobile Safari, News, Mail, Messages, Calendars, Notes, and every single installed app that uses a UIWebView, WKWebView and presumably SFSafariViewController too.

I'm guessing something disastrous went wrong in WebKit or maybe just openURL:

What a monumental disaster. iOS 9.3 dead in the water for what seems like a large population?  Maybe should've had a few more beta releases to catch this?

I suspect links work in Chrome because it doesn't use the same WebKit engine that Apple's apps are built on.

My only work around so far is using Firefox, click and hold a link opens a drop down menu that allows opening the link in a new tab

phone was fine until I updated some apps today, 2 off the apps were Google related, and I am suspicious that it is google related

What a dumb bug. Confirmed that this happens for me both on the iPhone 6 Plus and my old iPad 4. For me it especially happens after a Google search, none of the links work when tapped. If I long-press a link to open it in the background, Safari freezes up for 20-30 seconds. I rely on clicking from Google search links sometimes hundreds of times a week. Sure we all do. I also see that the issue is apparently happening in Yahoo and other sites. Bit of a worry at this juncture...

A very basic, temporary workaround: I now use iCabMobile for browsing. Tapping and holding a link opens a contextual menu that contains several options for opening the link (same tab, new tab, background tab). As this seems to bypass the now buggy Apple API for following links, it works.

The only temporary solution was to download another browser. I've tried Puffin and it seems the only one that is working normally. Hope it helps.
