Q: Camcorder Microphone as audio input?

Hi there,

I've got a mac mini running Yosemite with an mic in port (as well as audio in).

I also have a powered microphone from a sony camcorder (model ecm-msd1). I'm wondering if the powered mike will be a useful audio input for the mac?

The headphone jack on most Macs includes a contacts for an unamplified mic. See:
How to use Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic with your Mac - Apple Support
They also have a line-in jack. That connection accommodates an amplified audio input signal
