Q: Apple TV 4 falls off network & number after name returns (2)

Since the latest update the apple tv is unfindable on the network once it goes to sleep. Prior to the update, it functioned normally and you could wake it from sleep via airplay.

Having to wake it manually every time i want to use it now, when it does, it comes up with Apple TV (2), each time i wake it its number increases.

Ive changed the name, restarted the apple tv and the airport extreme, the name issue comes right, but the wake on lan issue remains.

Until i wake it again then the number returns and starts increasing.

This problem was existent in the Apple TV 3 from update in september 2014, the problem stayed since, I've had them replaced, reset, updated and tried them on different networks, nothing changed the problem.

So it looks like we're stuck with the same problem again. Im not expecting anyone to give me a fix for this. This is merely just a post so that anyone with the same issues as me can see they're not alone.

Apple TV 4, tvOS 9.1

    Can confirm the issue.

Had already an Apple TV v3 with this problem (connected via LAN), switch was always reporting drop in connection, couldn't find a solution.

Replaced it by Apple TV v4, same problem (tvOS 9.2) ! Also I got at least in the past a number behind the device in the airplay menu.

For me it seems to be a general issue. Should be easy to reproduce.

Apple TV v3 now connected via WLAN at a different place --> Problem solved, device appears always in airplay device list

Apple TV v4 (still wired) still appears and disappears.

Here another thread giving some more related information:

Apple TV drops Ethernet every half hour

Reported this to Apple, hope they'll take it serious and fix it asap.

I am not sure if this is feasible for everyone but it seems to be working now for me:

I have an ATV 4 that I had connected via Ethernet.  Even though I set it to never sleep it would fall asleep and refuse to be woken up by Airplay (I would need to tap the remote) and when it did wake it would have a number in () next to it.

I unplugged the Ethernet cable and then went into settings and connected it to my wifi network.  Then I plugged the Ethernet cable back in.  Essentially it is now "aware" of the wifi network (best I can tell) but actually connected by Ethernet.

After a day or so, it seems to wake up fine and no more numbers.

Hope that helps at least some...

Thanks for the hint on turning sleep mode off. It was annoying to have to wake the unit before streaming, and so far it eliminated the number issue

Great that you are happy now!

Please be aware that your device stays always ON now.

This is NOT the solution for the problem with the LAN port.

I tried everything proposed in this thread, nothing works acceptable.

Finally I use WIFI instead of LAN port of ATV 4. Now it works like expected but I want to use the LAN port.

This is really a joke, hope Apple will fix this soon, if not I'll return my device under warranty.

I've also found that removing the LAN cable and using wifi solves this problem.

This is a bug, why put in an ethernet port if it's not going to work properly.

What I've been doing and trying with the Apple TV to work around this issue.

Submitted a bug report for this some time ago, as per usual.. "Engineering has determined that your bug report is a duplicate of another issue and will be closed."

You name it, I've probably tried it. Wired/WiFi/Static IP's/Different networks/Isolated hotspot network testing/Resetting/Restoring etc etc. The problem has remained through every update. So i restored it a couple of days ago for the i don't know how many times, gave it a new name, restarted Airports (all network hardware is Apple and one is the DHCP server for other network devices, 95% have static IP's however). All was well.. until I come home a couple hours later that day to find that it has counted its way up to (110) in this time already.

    Fuming intensifies

Checking all bonjour services on my network, theres 5 bonjour services which it has.

Under different services it has different names.

    Bonjour ServiceResponsibility/FunctionBonjour Name
    _airplay._tcp.AirPlayApple TV (30)
_appletv-v2._tcp.AirPlay and Home Sharing relatedApple TV
_raop._tcp.AirTunes/Remote Audio Output ProtocolApple TV (110)
    _sleep-proxy._tcp.Sleep Proxy ServiceApple TV
_touch-able._tcp.Remote Control Protocol for Watch/iOS DeivcesApple TV

    This explains why;

    • iTunes lists it as Apple TV (110) due to _raop._tcp. (AirTunes/Remote Audio Output Protocol)

    • AirPlay Mirroring and AirPlay devices from iOS Control Centre list it as Apple TV due to _appletv-v2._tcp. (AirPlay and Home Sharing related)
    • iOS & Watch Remote App lists it as Apple TV due to _touch-able._tcp. (Remote Control Protocol for Watch/iOS Deivces)

But it doesn't explain why I'm not seeing Apple TV (30) for the _airplay._tcp. bonjour service, as all your usual AirPlay services are being shown already, not sure what app/function uses the _airplay._tcp. service.

All names are tied to its ethernet IP. As I'm writing this my iTunes AirPlay is stopping/starting every 5 minutes and during the time its hanging the Apple TV bonjour service _raop._tcp. increases its number in brackets by 1, so I'm currently up to 115.. (I started at 110 when i started writing this).

Thinking i had tried everything i could, a crazy suggestion came about. Add a space or two to the end of the name of it, tried it i did, I've not had a problem with the name since. Don't ask me why this is happening, i have no idea. I assumed it would just over write its own name on the network and begin adding numbers again but it just has not happened under its normal usage.

I think the following may explain this business of the added numbers Re: Apple TV name followed by random number when using AirPlay

It seems this has been around for years Apple is fixing it, or not, apparently.

SInce your ATV seems to be dropping the network extremely frequently, and immediately reconnecting with a new IP, do you think there might be a network problem? Might be another wifi router, cordless phone, recently mentioned LED lightbulb, etc. Since other users have no problems, there must be something at your location that's upsetting things. I suspect that if you resolve the network problem, the numbering issue will go away, because the ATV IP will be stable. There should be no need for the solution I linked above.

There is an AirPort update:AirPort Update

    This update:

    • Fixes an issue which may prevent communication between clients on the same network
    • Improves performance with an extended guest network
    • Addresses potential naming conflicts with Bonjour Sleep Proxy

Hopefully this helps with name conflicts!

I previously thought the problem with sleep proxy disappearing had been solved, several months ago, but I was soon to be disappointed.

Now, as of tvOS 9.2.2 released on July 18, it does genuinely appear to work. I updated two days ago, and I'm very pleased to see my ATV4 available on AirPlay several hours after I've shut it down.

Long may this continue, into tvOS 10. All the same, there's no way I'll update until I know for sure it works.
