Q: Safari won't open any links and then freezes/crashes

HELP! The Safari on my fairly new iphone 6s has gone haywire.  Safari opens fine, and if you type in a direct URL, it will go to the website just fine.  However, if i attempt to search any subject it will pull up the pages of websites, but will not allow me to connect to any of the links and when I select a link it then freezes and crashes safari.   Additionally, if i try to open any weblink imbedded in an email, it again freezes and crashes both mail AND Safari. SO FUN!

And just to test general connectivity and function, i downloaded Google Chrome to see if I can search and connect there, and I can. The search works fine, pulls up the pages, and strangely, I can't access the pages direct, but it will allow me to open the page in another tab.  I feel like this should be a clue for someone smarter than I.

I have been tinkering for about an hour with it and I am at a loss.

Things I have tried:

1. Resetting the phone - both just by powering off and a hard reset (Power + Home)

2. Turning off Safari Suggestions (and browser suggestions) - this was a fix that I found for a bug that seemed similar from earlier this year.

3. Changing the search engine from Google to Yahoo and back, nothing.

4. Private Browsing (again a "fix" I found on the interwebs...)

5. Downloading and upgrading my iOS to 9.3. Still nothing.

6. Banging my head on my computer and cursing very loudly at the phone.

PLEASE, if you have any suggestions, i am all ears... I am going bananas and can't let it go.

THANK YOU!!!

iPhone 6s, iOS 9.3, Prob started while on 9.2.1

I am having the exact same problem regarding safari searching but not being able to open actual links and then take you to the homepage. Really frustrating when im out and about or at uni trying to just quickly search for something because i get reminded that safari is not working.

I had fiddled around with the safari settings, but nothing seems to be able to un freeze it or fix the issue.. It just came on quite suddenly too, so i don't know if its a bug or what.

    Please help!

It is an iOS problem.  I just got off the phone with Apple and their technicians are aware of the problem and are working on it.  No time line on when it will be fixed.

I had all of the same problems with hyperlinks in emails and on Safari locking up just after I updated my 2 iPhone 6 and iPad air to iOS 9.3.  Last night Apple walked me through their suggestions of turning off Java (partially works), rebooting, etc.  I finally backed-up and then reinstalled iOS through iTunes and it worked.  All of the links were working again.  I did this for all there devices and about 4 hours later (also had to add back my credit cards for apple pay, add my finger prints, etc, lost all health data... a real pain in!).  It was working OK and then this morning I noticed an app that I had downloaded was frozen during install on my phone.  I restarted my iPhone and then all the hyperlinks stopped working and froze again.  I called Apple again tonight, my iPad was still working and they asked me to restarted it.  This caused it to stop working and all of the hyperlinks freeze just as they did before the reinstall.

Very upset with the three bricks that I own and data plan that I am paying for that I can't use.

Hi stanmich3, I've tried practically everything over my Easter long weekend except getting rid of Booking.com app. Is everything still working for you since? Would you mind advising how to not allow Booking.com to reinstall with a backup?

I am also experiencing in both Mail and Safari freeze / crashes when trying to open links. The problem just started today. I haven't loaded any new apps etc. Thank-you for all the posts regarding the subject. I hope that this will be remedied very soon.

When you are doing the restore all of the apps need to reinstall.  Just hold your finger on the Booking.com icon before it completely downloadsuntil the icons start to wiggle.  That will bring up an "x",in the upper left hand corner of the icon.  Click on the x.  Booking.com is gone and hopefully your problems are as well.

    still working great for me!

Same problem here - iPhone 6. I have booking.com on my device... Have tried the workarounds, nothing working although turning off Javascript gives some functionality but renders most sites useless. Hyperlinks from messages and Mail crash the phone. Apple help!!!!!

The only thing for users who's experiencing these problems are to switch off the JavaScript in Safari. This will not affect the problems with other apps and links, it only works in Safari. I have been in contact with Apple on this, and they say that an update should be available in two days, to fix this problem. Fingers crossed
