Q: Retime video and audio in sync in Motion 5

I'm using Motion 5 to make videos in which clones of actors talk and interact with each other.  The masking is no problem - that's all sussed.  But unless the actor times the dialogue and reactions perfectly (which is just about impossible), then re-timing the two 'halves' of the dialogue occasionally so that responses and reactions occur at exactly the right moment is necessary.

So I can use the 'set speed' control on a section of a video track in the timeline to make the actor's visible reaction perfectly timed - but the audio doesn't re-time with it!  I've tried everything I can think of, including trying to cut out bits of audio so that when the re-timed actor speaks again, it's back in sync, but I can't, it seems, split the audio track without also splitting the video track, which mucks up the retiming I already did!

I'm very much a raw beginner with Motion - but I only want to do this one thing with it!  Any help?

If you're importing audio separately from video, then you need to retime the audio separately. Otherwise, the audio and video should retime together if they are part of the same file.

To retime separate audio, open the Audio editor (click on the speaker icon on the bottom right "tray" to open the editor.)

    Select the Audio track.

In the inspector, select the Properties tab and mouse over the Timing bar and then click on "Show" to open up the timing editor.  You can speed it up or slow it down with the percentage value.  I recommend setting markers on the audio and video before changing the timing, then use the playhead as a guide to align the makers for the separate tracks. (You can simultaneously have the Video Timeline editor open as well  - resize the "boxes" to fit both at once under your canvas.)
