Q: Over 20 school iPad2s missing airplay. All worked fine as of June 2015. None have airplay this school year.

Over 20 school iPad2s missing airplay. All worked fine as of June 2015. None have airplay this school year. All 70 of our new iPad Airs have airplay and work just fine with the same Apple TVs. I have reset all content/settings, restarted all components, even called Apple Support...no luck. This is something else other than a basic restart or fix because I have searched the internet and it seems to be a big issue with the older ipads/iphones and Apple TVs.

iPad 2, iOS 9.2.1, null

My iPad2 with 9.3 installed works perfectly with my Apple TV3 with 7.2.1 installed.  Airplay works with or without mirror.

I have an Airport Extreme and a couple of Airport Express units making up my network.

What ATV's are you using with what software version and what version is on your iPad2's?

Apple TV 3 with updated software.

    iPad2s with 9.3

Our iPad airs work perfectly with the same apple tvs.

I have an iPad Air as well and it works as well as the iPad 2.

So just like the puzzle goes: What is different between these two sets?

My guess: Focus on the network.

That is what I originally thought as well, but all 20 iPads not working but all iPad Airs do work? You are right it is definitely a puzzle.

If it were an iPad or Apple TV problem I would have it as well.  Problem solving says focus on what is different to ID the root cause.

Are you sure your ATV and the iPad2's are on the same WiFi network?  If not, that could explain why the Air works see:

    Use peer-to-peer AirPlay

With peer-to-peer AirPlay, your iOS device and Apple TV don't have to be on the same Wi-Fi network. To use peer-to-peer AirPlay, you need one of these devices with iOS 8 or later:

    • iPhone 5 or later
    • iPad mini or iPad (4th generation or later)
    • iPod touch (5th generation or later)

You can stream content to your Apple TV (3rd generation rev A, model A1469 or later).

Make sure that both devices have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on. If you want to stream iTunes Store content, you also need an Internet connection.
