Q: "Missing File" error message on shared stream photos?

I was added to a shared stream with several hundred photos by a friend. The photos appear on my macbook, but when I try to message these photos to myself, post them to facebook, or do anything else, I get a "missing file" error message that prompts me to search for the original. How can I get this to work?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

Lets start with the details- you posted in the iPhoto for Mac forum and state that you have OS X 10.11.1 (which is out of date - you should be using OS X 10.11.4) so we need to know if you are using iPhoto 9.6.1 or Photos 1.5

And do you have a referenced library (you have unchecked the preference to copy imported items to the iPhoto (or Photos) Library) or a managed library

    Hi,

I have a managed library (I have checked the preference to copy imported items to the Photos library). I am using Photos Version 1.2 (340.4.0).

Did you save the photos from the shared album to your Photos Library?  They are not automatically imported.

If you did import them from your Shared album, the photos should be in your Photos Library.

You can get the error message about missing originals for three reasons - either your Photos library has a corruption - permission issues or similar, or the photos have been removed from your library by a cleaning application, or your Photos library has been restored from a backup , but not completely.

What happened to your Photos Library before the problem occurred? Did you move your Photos Library to a different location or restored it?  Did you run any duplicate removal or cleaning software?  Use the library from a different user account?

    Thanks for your reply,

How do you import the photos from the shared stream? I didn't use any sort of cleaning software or use the library from a different account. The photos were shared from someone else though, if that makes a difference.

To import photos from a Shared Album ctrl-click the photo in the Shared Album, then use the command "Import" from the contextual menu that will pop up.

If you are seeing "Show in Library" instead of "Import", the photo has already been imported.  Then click "Show in Library" and try to message the photo from the moment, that will be revealed.
