Q: I am looking to buy a "new" ipod classic. Ipod Superstore claims to get new ipods from Apple stating that Apple is still making them for 5 year but only selling them to a few vendors for resale. Is this possible?

Probably not still making them, but Apple's policy is to service products for at least five years after they are no longer produced and sold

With iPods, "servicing" often means giving you a replacement for paying the out-of-warranty fee, which is $299 for the last iPod classic model, according to this document

So Apple likely has a stockpile that is enough to last until five years after 2014 (when the last iPod classic model was discontinued).  This vendor is unlikely to be an authorized reseller, so the iPod may not be covered by the standard one-year warranty.  That's why it comes in a plain white box, not a retail box.  It's meant to be a servicing replacement for existing iPod classic (last model) owners.  It may be "unused," but it's still old.  Parts like LCD, hard drive, and battery age by sitting in a warehouse.

Demand for the iPod Classic remains very high.  Amazon sells new ones also.

I would buy one while you still can. Just make sure you can return it if not happy.
