    Open contacts.

in the menu bar click on contacts

Select Preferences from pull down menu

Click on the template tab in preferences

In the template that appears - click add field at the top

    select dates

specify a type for the new date field (there is a type of "other")

There is one automatically set by the system. However, it is not readily visible. You can make Smart Groups that show cards that were updated arm change relative to a date or number of days.

If you need the date to show on the card for some other purpose, you'd need to use SBeattie2's suggestion.

Can you be more specific on what it is you are trying to accomplish with the "data entry date" that you would like to "add to new cards"?  I interpreted your question as you would like a new date field of some sort to appear in the default template each time you add a new contact and that you would be entering something into the date field for each new contact that you add.  If my understanding is incorrect - please clarify.

I'd like a date to appear on each individual card that indicates its creation date. If the card is modified,  the date would change. This date is independent of the "Field date." I seem to recall at one time in the past that a date would appear in the lower right of a card's window when it was created.

If you want it to be visible on each card, you will have to use one of the date fields and manually update it.

If it showed on cards in the past, it does not now.

Thanks for your responses. I am aware of each of your solutions but want one that the OS insert much like it does when a file is saved.
