Q: System crash synch

Ok, so please feel free to talk to me like i'm a moron. Because, well frankly I may be.

I'm so fresh to the work of editing, I started just two days ago, on a brand new iMac. A few years ago I made a film, and having shuffled the project from one editor to another because of budget constraints, so now i'm editing it. The reason i'm telling you this, is that my experience of editing is watching Larry Jordan tutorials, for two days.

Everything was going fine, I was synching audio, then I tried to synch audio and it just stuck. No every time i try a file anywhere it just sticks. Then when I cancel I get this screen grab, again which just sticks. The only way to get out is to literally force start my computer again. But each time I go back, same story, now nothing with synch. Any clues what i've done?

What formats are you working with – both the audio and the video?

Is there anything different about the problematic clips compared to the others?

Did you sync the clips that were successfully synced or did someone else?

Try creating a new empty test project. Does it work if you edit one of the non synced clips to the timeline and perform some ordinary edits? And if you add a synced clip to that timeline?

    Russ

PS: If you bothered to invest that kind of time  in LJ's tutorials, you are definitely not a moron.

Hi Russ thanks for your reply.

Even the footage i have previously synched will not synch. I', mot trying to double synch it by the way, i just went back and synched the original, or at least intended to.

In total I have attempted to synch about 30 pieces, some that previously synched some that I haven't.

The sound is in a wave format, video a standard mov. style captured from a canon.

Everything was working absolutely fine, i synched about 8 or 9 pieces of sound and video, now nothing, just a frozen ****. If I try another project the same thing happens. The computer is not at fault its pretty much the only thing on it, and i ramped up everything to top level when i purchased it.

I wondered if maybe i'd accidentally touched something i should not have.

This is how any audio synch now plays out.

Delete the app preferences bu holding down the option and command keys when you launch FCP any time the application crashes or freezes. That will open a brand new library and you can re-open your working library by navigating from the File menu.

Verify that the video clips have audio for the sync process to use wave forms and that the sync settings dialog Synchronization field is set to Automatic.

If verified, right click one of the non-synced video clips and transcode to Optimized. See whether it will now sync. If it doesn't, try placing markers on one the audio and video clips at roughly the same point in time. Try once again.

Post back and let us know.
