Q: upgrade from osx 10.9.5 to 10.11.4

Attempting to upgrade from 10.9.5 to El Capitan 10.11.4 the system tells me it needs 10.11 - not mentioning which release, and in addition I am not able to find any location that allows uploading an interim version.

Copyinfg the installation app from  my MBook, whihc I upgrades months ago, results in an error message (probaby defective or altered copy of this app....)

 

What can I do?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

A:

You need to download the full installer from the App Store. this will download the latest version which is 10.11.4.

Once it is downloaded and before you install it make a copy of Install Mac OS X El Capitan.app which you can find

in your Applications folder, drag and drop this app to another part of the mac or onto a usb stick or similar. This comes in handy in the future

in case you need to reinstall the OS, saves having to do it over the net.

 

Click the download button when you get to this screen on the App Store.

    Everything Eau says below is good.

     

    But first, what do you mean by:

    I realize Apple wants everyone on the latest version, but you are rarely under pressure to upgrade. In fact, it limits compatibility with some older programs.

     

    I do like El Cap. I just wonder why you "need" it....

    I think he has been trying to use the 10.11.4 update (either the delta or combo from the Apple Support Downloads site) to try and upgrade his Mavericks install.

    That way he would get the warning that the system needs 10.11.

     

    Thats my take anyway.

    So,

    Eau Rouge is right, I downloaded the full 10.11.4 dmg and after unpacking etc. I got this message that 10.11 is needed to update to 10.11.4 - which I thought means some previous releases like 10.11.1, .2 or .3 ... So I stopped it. This cannot be just a warning message telling me what I am about to do anyway, I mean we don't talk about Windows...

    Well then: Should I ignore the hint (I'm not sure whether the system would continue the install anyway, but I can try)

     

    @Grant: I know about the limitations with other programs, I had this on my MacBook, too, and there were workarounds using old flash plugins that did the job for Adobe apps. And all the rest works smoothly. (Except mail which takes forever to load my mails - but this can be due to the amount of emails or the slow data rate.) The reason why I want to update the iMac is that the calendar agent app crashes every couple of secs, and this drives me nuts. Switching it off is no solution if you use external cals, so I thought to solve the problem with a full new installation.

    the delta update; updates 10.11.3 to 10.11.4

    the combo update updates any version 10.11.(version.1.2.or .3) to 10.11.4

    when a new update is released many people are will advise using the combo

    as it resets some system files for the OS.

    whenever the App Store update section recommends an OS update

    it is sometimes best to go to the Apple Support Downloads pages

    and download the Combo update. It normally downloads quicker.

    No, you need to download 10.11 from the App Store, just as Eau Rouge has explained. This will give you 10.11.4 directly – no further updates needed after that. (You don't need, and can't even download 10.10!)

    So there might be a bug in the dmg I downloaded. It simply rejects the request. See screen print.

    German text reads: This Updafte needs OSX Version 10.11

    Downloading again via app store takes forever and the Apple Support Download page always redirects me to the App store.

    Any alternative way to get the dowmload?

    You can only download El Capitan through App Store.

     

    If you have an Apple Retail Store near you, you should be able to get them to download it for you.

    You will need to make an appointment first though.

    Yes, I know German (I'm half German myself). But it seems you are still trying to run the 10.11.4 updater. This will not work. You'll need to 'buy' El Capitan first, which is freely available through the App Store.

    The only problem still is: If you want to download the OS from the App Sore it offers 10.11.4 Update

    Where the heck did they hide the "El Capitan" to "freely buy" that you mention???
