Q: iPad Pro 9.7 WiFi connection issues - 5GHz

My brand new iPad Pro 9.7 is having major issues staying connected to my home WiFi 5GHz channel. The connection drops about every 30 seconds or so and I have to manually add the network back in. Also, when reconnecting it does not always take the password, and it takes several attempts before it finally accepts it.

Oddly, the iPad is rock solid when connected to the 2.4GHz channel and has yet to drop that connection. All my other iOS devices (older iPad and two iPhone 6's) have no problem staying connected to the 5GHz channel so I know its not a settings issue with the router. But just to be sure I put all the router settings to those listed here: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points - Apple Support

That did not fix the issue.

I then went back to the Apple store to see if they could help me and they ended up exchanging the iPad for another one. The same exact issues exist with the replacement. I even made sure to not restore from a backup, and setup the replacement iPad as a NEW iPad. I then tried connecting to WiFi with the pre-installed OS and still had the same issues. I then updated the iPad to the latest OS 9.3.1 and it still exhibits the same issues.

I am at a loss for what to do next. I will be returning the iPad Pro 9.7 for a second time in two days. This was not ready for release.

All iPhones, iPads and Macs now on the market come with wireless AC. They are backwards compatible but as you have found out sometimes it takes a bit of tinkering with routers. That's why I suggested trying different bandwidths.

From the specs of your iPad Pro:

    Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n/ac); dual channel (2.4GHz and 5GHz); HT80 with MIMO

    Enjoy your new iPad...

I have the same problem with my ipad pro however i have the comcast TG862  modem. I have other ipad/mac mini/iphones/macbooks etc which connect to 5GHZ without any issues. I created an incident with Apple support  and it worked for a day the problem started again. My Ipad drops connection and then prompts me to enter the password but does not accept the password. I returned the Ipad and cant think of looking at another product. Hope Apple fixes this soon . Case ID: 1122701277/

I had the same issue: Ipad Pro 9.7 worked fine on public network but not home one. Would connect and then drop after a few seconds.

Resolved by going into the router security settings and changing the encryption from TKIP to AES. Apple does discourage TKIP: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points - Apple Support but was like finding a needle in a haystack.

Hope this is helpful to others.

I have the same issue - after the recent software updates, my ipad pro cannot connect to my wifi network (all other ios devices, including an ipad 2, can connect to this network with my user name and password). Given that I work primarily from a University campus, where I have no control over the router or the bandwith, I am at a loss. (I cannot try to mess with the router settings in any way and this wifi connection used to work with this ipad pro and still works with other ipads and iOS devices) I tried all the other solutions (restoring, resetting, etc.) and nothing works. My next move is to get it to an Apple store (I doubt that it will do any good, given that this seems to be a common problem and not just an issue with my specific hardware). Or I will just have to wait for a new software update which may fix this issue.

So at the moment, my ipad pro is a very expensive piece of junk (since it is practically useless without a wifi).

If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know!

OMG!!!!!! I cannot thank you enough!!!!

I have been pulling my hair out over this exact problem for the last 2 weeks. I have had 4 replacement iPads from the Apple Store, the last of which was new out of the box (i.e., not a refurb).......they had no idea either!!

I have an ASUS Router too, albeit a new model, and as soon as I changed the default setting from 80Mhz to 40Mhz, everything is working perfectly again!

Hi. Can you describe your problem in more detail? There are several suggestions in this thread. What have you tried already? Have you reviewed your router WiFi settings with the Apple recommendations, Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points - Apple Support?

I Lose connectivity every few minutes. I have other devices including 3 older iPad minis, ipad 2, surface pro & they do not have this issue. I have tried to restart the router as well as the iPad.

I see. Please check the other items mentioned in this thread, especially the bandwidth and WiFi encryption setting, and see if they help at all. This is a user-to-user forum, so you need to do some work yourself to solve your problem.

Should not have to spend so much of my time trying to figure this out when I have spent a $1000 on an iPad Pro. Specially when other devices are functioning. Obviously Apple failed to deliver with this product!
