If you think you may have missed something, the only way we can help is to state everything you actually did and everything that happened, including error messages.

1. updated my iPad to iOS 9.3
2. iPad asked for user name and password, I am the original owner but ;
3. iPad stated apple ID and password invalid
4. I searched my house and every nook and cranny to find my original ID and password but could not
5. used my current apple ID and password to attempt activation - apple ID and password cannot be used to activate this iPad
6. opened iTunes, updated to latest version iTunes, plugged in my iPad attempted to restore
7. it asked for my apple ID and password
8. iPad stated apple ID and password invalid
repeated steps 4 - 7 4 times, still unable to activate my iPad

Apr 2, 2016 11:55 AM in response to modular747by valeriefrompullman,Yes I went to the apple store near me and we tried "how to find your apple ID & if you forget your password. found my current apple ID that I use on my mac and phone, but not the apple id I originally had on the iPad. Guess this means a phone call and lots of waiting on the phone?

The article above starts with these words (your issue).
"Updating some iOS devices (iPhone 5s and earlier and iPad Air and earlier) to iOS 9.3 can require entering the Apple ID and password used to set up the device in order to complete the software update. If you can't recall your password or can't sign in, try these steps."
