Q: iMessages disappearing after full harddrive

Hi!

Running:

Mid 2011 iMac with Yosemite, 10.10.5.

3.4 GHz Intel Core i7.

16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3.

One 250GB Flash disk, and one 2TB SATA disk.

My start up disk became full and all my iMessages disappeared on the iMac. I have since freed up space on the primary drive. Now, new messages are visible only until I close the iMessage window. The old ones still seem to be present in the Messages folder. Doesn't look like the new ones are being saved there, since they disappear right away.

I'm not especially concerned about restoring the old messages to the app (although it would be nice), but would love to get iMessages working on the iMac reliably again going forward.

Let me know if you have any suggestions! I haven't updated the OS because I'm worried this old iMac may not be able to handle it, especially since the start up disk is this 250GB SSD.

Thanks in advance!

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

    Hi,

The Question becomes "Which 'Messages' folder, where " ?

In ~/Library/Messages are the Chat db. items that seems to hold the iMessages for definite and the location of Saved Chats from all services if your Save Chats.

Also in ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Messages is the Archive Folder for Saved Chats  (I have seen two posts that have an Alias here and the Archive folder in the first Location as well).

The Attachments Folder is also in the first Location and has an Alias in the second.

Is this an Aggregate drive or is the Start Up partition only the 25Gb Flash Drive ?

If you have a Backup then it might be possible to Restore things to the point where they did work.

You might then lose later iMessages as they are deleted from the Server when your device accepts.

If you don't have a Backup then they are gone.
