Q: No, my problem is NOT solved: still can't sync some photos to iPad Pro from iMac

I posted this question yesterday, and after one response (which was not helpful, though I do appreciate Rudegar's having tried to help me), mysteriously my question was marked as "Solved" in the list of questions, so it's unlikely that more people will look at that thread. I can't figure out how to remove that "Solved" label, so I'm posting my question again.

I'm trying to sync selected photos from my iMac (running Mavericks 10.9.5) to my new iPad Pro (12.9 inch model, updated to iOS 9.3.1). I connect the iPad to the iMac, fire up iTunes (version 12.3.3.17, it says), select the iPad in iTumes and then the "Photos" tab over on the left. On the right I choose "Selected Folders," and in the "Folders" window below that I check the boxes for the folders that I want and click on "Apply" if it's there or "Sync" if that's the only option showing.

Every time, a few photos refuse to move over to the iPad. It's always the same ones, but I can't find any common characteristic (e. g., wrong extension or huge file size) that would explain why those photos won't go while everything else will. Typically in a folder with 20 photos, between 15 and 20 will move over to the iPad. But why won't the rest? This is really bugging me. I've tried unplugging and replugging the iPad, turning it off and on, quitting and restarting iTunes, and even putting the ones that won't sync into a special folder all of their own. No luck.

Can anybody help me out?

iPad Pro, iOS 9.3.1

I'm using iTunes for syncing from iPhoto.  It seems to chug along just fine, then round about half to three quarters of the way through (differs every time) just stops the sync completely and says it has finished.  Yet the same as in your case, it hasn't.  This is beginning to sound like another iOS 9.3 bug as that seems to be the common denominator amongst us all.  I've updated to 9.3.1 because I had the Safari links not working bug in 9.3, but the photo syncing problem still remains.

Thanks, elcpu. Unfortunately, the support page to which you referred me says that to use a Mac with Airdrop it needs to have Yosemite or later, and I'm not keen to ditch Mavericks and switch to El Capitan just to see whether it'll resolve this issue. In any case, that page seems to say that Airdrop can be used to send something from an iOS device to another iOS device or to a Mac; can it also be used to send something from a Mac to an iOS device?

Airdrop works from very well from Macs to iOS. I use it all the the time and once configured it is a breeze. To send to iPads, the Mac needs to be a 2012 or newer model with OS X Yosemite or later. I have a MBP, 2014 with El Capitan - no issues.

Use AirDrop to send content from your Mac - Apple Support

To test the pictures, you can always email a few to yourself but this is nowhere as fast as Airdrop. Airdrop has no size restriction either.

I wonder if an app called iMazing would help you at the moment Peter until Apple sort this out?  I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post a direct link to the iMazing website, but you can Google it.  It seems to transfer photos between iPads, iPhones, iPods and computers via drag and drop. It has just been recommended by Adam at MacCast podcast.

If an app does not appear on the App Store then it cannot be downloaded to an iOS device unless it is jailbroken which I strongly advise against. However if you are looking for 3rd party apps to transfer photos, SHAREit works BUT it is nowhere as good as AirDrop. I don't understand the reluctance to update to El Capitan. Besides missing out on new features like AirDrop, the older OSs are not supported leaving a user exposed to the latest vulnerabilities.

Peter. What you could have a look at doing is trying to use iCloud Photo library.

Because you are using a mac - It might be worth updating to El Capitan - http://www.apple.com/ie/osx/whats-new/

Or you could upload the photos to iCloud.com

This might not fix it but it is certainly a work around that you could try using.

This sounds like the same problem I am having Caroline....also with a new iPad Pro 9.7.

No problems with my other iPads/iPhone, all running current OS.

May I suggest that all of us with this problem leave a bug report for Apple?  I've just done so here:

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

The more of us who do so, the more likely it is that Apple will do something to fix it I hope.

For now I'm going to use either iMazing app for OSX or Photosync app for OSX  and see if I can get all my photos on my new iPad Pro in that way.  But it's really annoying not to be able to sync from iTunes.

    Hi,

So, I spent around an hour online with Apple Support via Chatter.  We went through the issue and all of the solutions that I had tried.  They are going to have their Engineering Team research the problem and I should hear back from them within 2 days.  Once I learn anything, I will update this thread.

Some ideas to try on this thread.  However I'm afraid I simply don't have the time to go through 5000 photos to find out which ones don't have read/write capability!  It appears that reverting to a previous version of iTunes may solve the problem but I'm not sure how to get hold of that as I've already updated both my Macs.

    Try this. Working for me.

    The FIX!

Thanks to Apple Technician Robert Cisneros in Boise, Idaho, on the late shift! Gracias. He was as mystified as I was by the issue and will be reporting it. We don't know why it was happening but he found a way to fix it.

The fix is slow but it works.

    1. Ensure that you have a back-up copy of all your picture files before undertaking this process.
    2. Open Photos while holding down the option and command keys. Click repair your photo library.
    3. When the problem first manifests itself, in iTunes, remove all synced photos from your iPad. This is important to isolate those albums with the bug.
    4. Start over with the sync but sync one album at a time. You have to be patient and watch that all the pictures in a particular album are transferred. If they transfer as expected, no problem. Move on to the next album to be synced.
    5. When an album fails to sync properly, create a new folder on your desktop (or somewhere appropriate) with that album's name (or anything you'd care to call it).
    6. In the Photos app, open the problem album and highlight all its pictures (command A).
    7. Go to the Photos 'File' menu and export 'X number of' photos. Export them to the folder you created in step 5 above.
    8. When the export is complete, delete the pictures in the album from your Photos library. Then delete the album. Then delete the picture files from your pictures folder. It is ok, you have them all in the folder you created in step 5 and your back-up copy (step 1).
    9. Put the desktop folder you created into your pictures folder (or an appropriate location for your media files).
    10. In Photos, create a 'new empty album' and name it with the title of the album just deleted (or anything else you'd care to call it).
    11. Import the exported pictures back into Photos. Put them into the empty album created in step 10. Organise them as you desire.
    12. Try syncing the album again through iTunes. This time it should work.

Thank you so much Geoff.  As stated on the other thread, I will give this a go when I have a few hours to spare, probably after the weekend.  So annoying, and such a silly bug for Apple to have let through the net.  I hope they produce a proper update soon.

Elcpu - sorry I forgot to reply to your post.  The app I mentioned - iMazing - is actually an OSX app for transferring between Mac desktops/notebooks to iOS devices. It does seem to work well I gather, although I haven't yet tried it. I cannot yet upgrade to El Capitan because my Xerox printer/scanner/copier would lose some of its functionality, and at the moment I don't want to pay out for a new laser printer. But in this instance upgrading to El Cap doesn't help the iTunes syncing problem, as friends on El Cap have the same problem.  Apple are still supporting Yosemite (which I am using) with security updates.

I have finally transferred all my pictures to my new iPad Pro using the fix above. It took a long time (over 10,000 pictures) and it is a bit complicated but it should work for you too until Apple provides us with a bug fix. A few strange things happened like some albums STILL not transferring. I just went away and tried again later and now it is done.

Apparently it is a bug in the new version of iTunes.   Reverting to 12.3.2.35 solves the problem although my Mac won't let me do that.
