That is what the Apple article describes that dialabrain pointed you too. You cannot however, consolidate multiple, Time Machine backups of different releases of OS X from multiple drives — into one Time Machine drive.
Each Time Machine backup, for a given OS X release is based on the computer name, and filesystem hierarchy of associated files/permissions/ownerships. Everything in this previous sentence is subject to change from one OS X release to another.

Mac App StoreJust to add, it is possible to back up multiple Macs to the same drive but you should really use one backup drive per Mac.
